Reception
[edit]A reviewer of The Retreat in Adrian Gilbert's War Books Review, wrote "On the whole, Jones’ approach works very well, giving the reader a discomfiting vision of the hideous nature of the war on the Eastern Front." and although critical of Jones overusing available source material, concluded "The Retreat is a fine piece of work, which shows the horror of the Moscow campaign in all its searing detail."[3]
The Library Journal found it to be "Fluently written with good sourcing"[4] and Booklist called it "Sound and readable."[4]
The Retreat has also been reviewed by Kirkus Reviews,[5] Publishers Weekly,[6] the Sunday Times,[7] and News Weekly.[8]

The great strength of this book is that it is based primarily upon eyewitness accounts of the conflict. These sometimes impede the flow of the narrative; but they do at least give the reader an invaluable insight into the perspectives of both the German and Soviet soldiers.
