Replacing individual boxes
[edit]Wikipedia:Babel
[edit]This template cannot be used with Template:Babel. Officially Wikipedia:Babel is made for languages not for writing systems, so the scripts should maybe not be there anyway.
User page layout
[edit]If you want to have the boxes in a comprising box you may like the following code:
{{userboxtop|scripts|Right}} {{user iso15924|Cyrl|3}} {{userboxbottom}}

Talk started 2006-08-25
[edit]Instead of creating a userbox for each individual language, this is a proposal to use a centralized template. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 13:04, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think the idea of "levels of competence" isn't very interesting or useful. I also think it would be nice if we used for the example character the same characters as are used in the Last Resort font. I'll help implement that if it's agreeable. Evertype 12:47, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Andrew also suggested not to use 6 levels. Maybe some users know Cyrl-russian and not the serb characters or the non-slavic stuff. Or only can decipher greek very slow, maybe not complete. If users like to show the differences, maybe let them. Free world, no big harm.
- The Last Resort font sounds interesting. What is it? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 14:10, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- For Kana, I put あ. I assumed people don't use か to write the word “kana” in the Japanese writing system, since its Japanese WP article is at [仮名] Error: {{Lang}}: script: jpan not supported for code: ja (help), not at [かな] Error: {{Lang}}: script: jpan not supported for code: ja (help). In this case, か may be slightly misleading, so we could as well use any syllable. Feel free to change, I don't oppose anything. I guess levels could be either reduced or replaced with an expression of skill somehow more qualitative than quantitative. Wikipeditor 01:25, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Adding Runr
[edit]There seem to be a couple of people at Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/Writing systems who are interested.
If I somehow manage to screw this up, please revert with extreme prejudice, hunt me down, and Nerf me without mercy. -emk 16:30, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- OK, it looks like all the bits are there. And for the record, I agree the that the 1-5, N categories are a bit silly. -emk 17:07, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Problems with Georgian and Korean
[edit]The Georgian boxes talk about "the Georgian (Mkhedruli)." The word "alphabet" needs to be put in there somewhere. Similarly, the Korean boxes talk about "the Hangul"; it should probably say something like "the Korean script (Hangul)". Richwales 04:01, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
individual colors
[edit]Very nice job with the new box : )
I see that it has several options, but I'm not exactly sure of the syntax intended to "set". For example, if I wanted to set it so that the colours matches what grk-5 had before deletion. How would I do that? Thank you in advance for your help : ) - jc37 00:37, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- thank you :-). I had no intention to allow individual coloring. But seems you don't like the current level 5 color. I think the colors should be harmonized with the language templates. Don't remember where the current color came from, I took it from one of the old level5 templates. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 00:43, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- I wasn't so much that I didn't 'like' it. Just the first thing I usually do, when seeing these new all-in-1 boxes is to see what cool options I have : )
- I guess I must have been confused by "level colour"? I saw all the options at {{User iso15924}}, and was attempting to decipher.
- And help would be appreciated : ) - jc37 00:53, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- there are not many options. you can only choose a writing system (e.g. Grek) and your kowledge level in this writing system. Colors are centrally set for all users at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:User_iso15924/level-color-main&action=edit Tobias Conradi (Talk) 02:14, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, I think I see... Those are the "set" colours for each level stage. I guess I saw the word "color" and I missed the rest. Than you for the clarification. : )

And thanks again for your work on this. - jc37 02:35, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
The box is very good indeed.

Telugu
[edit]Can someone please give support for Telugu script on this template? Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 00:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- You mean like {{User iso15924|Telu|1}} which produces
Telu-1 | This user has a basic understanding of the Telugu script. |
- Although I actually have no understanding of Telugu script in real life. DRMcCreedy (talk) 21:30, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
- Template {{ISO 15924/script-example-character}} has listed example-graphs for each Unicode script (as updated recently). For Telugu

Chinese (Hans & Hant)
[edit]Well, I've had a look at how to make these, but the coding's just baffing me... I don't suppose anyone feels like making the two Chinese script templates, do they - please? Grutness...wha? 07:44, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
- almost done, but I don't know which characters to add. Pls edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:User_iso15924/character&action=edit accordingly. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 20:01, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for that - I've used the old and new symbols for language, which should be appropriate enough. Grutness...wha? 22:45, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Good work.

Feature request
[edit]Please do not add 0-level language usercats (see the UCfD for more info). This also applies to Template:User iso15924/category-intro. Thanks! Xiner (talk, email) 16:14, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- What feature are you requesting? --MZMcBride 21:43, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- Level-0 user categories are no longer added by this template, per the recent UCfD that closed with a decision to delete such categories. I made a small error in the coding that temporarily removed users from all ISO-15924 categories, but it was just corrected and should make its way through the job queue shortly. mong looks strange on IE-7
[edit]Hi, I just created some boxes for the classic Mongolian script. Unfortunately IE 7 breaks the line between "Mong-" and "1" or "5" in the userboxes, making them even bigger than they already are (as in {{User iso15924|Mong|1}}). It looks OK in the category headers, probably because these use a smaller font. I have no idea what could be done, but I would prefer the line not to be broken. Any ideas? Yaan (talk) 20:12, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
No explanation
[edit]Can some explanation about how to locate userboxes be added on the template page? There's nothing there now, and it's very difficult to find boxes for individual languages. Badagnani (talk) 03:19, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Template:User iso15924/data-table. Can be found under "Overview". Yaan (talk) 09:45, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Character change didn't happen?!?
[edit]I changed the Georgian character just now in Template:User iso15924/character, but the change doesn't seem to be taking effect in the userbox. Did I do something wrong? Does some additional step need to be taken in order for a character change to be included? Is there some batch job involved, and I just need to be a bit more patient? Richwales (talk) 06:27, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- The change did finally take effect sometime overnight (in the past eight hours). I'd still like to know what accounted for this delay, for the sake of my curiosity if nothing else. Richwales (talk) 14:20, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Minor issue...
[edit]Having at last located where these boxes have been hidden (talk about user-unfriendly), I found myself unable to figure out how edit them. The reason that I wish to do so is that two of the boxes have errors; these are the user-cyrs box (has a stray >) and the user-gujr box (has a stray | in it, which screws up the entire box).
Also, I really do think that these should be made Babel-compatible, as writing systems are a vital component of language, especially on Wikipedia (what good is advertising that you know a language without being able to write it, eh?).
These really should be made more visible. And less confusing. This whole thing is a bit of a fustercluck, IMO.

Issue with Cyrl
[edit]
At the moment, there is an issue with Cyrl: {{user iso15924|Cyrl|2}}
→ {{user iso15924}}
The problemsquad has arrived. -DePiep (talk) 21:29, 9 August 2011 (UTC).
- Hm, not on this page. Elswhere yes.-DePiep (talk) 21:30, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
- For example, here I see only the Latin version broken, still Cyrl-5 which looks OK now has the same issue when opened in an old revision. Perhaps the problem is about namespaces or caching? --Microcell (talk) 21:34, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
- Comment Probably it distorts only the first template with this name on a page, regardless of the script (evidence). --Microcell (talk) 21:38, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
- Done Looks resolved for now (one edit had to be reverted). -DePiep (talk) 21:54, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Supercats
[edit]I removed "[[Category:User {{{1}}}]]" as this is always a supercategory of "[[Category:User {{{1}}}-{{{2}}}..." which immediately followed it (Category:User Cyrl is a supercat of Category:User Cyrl-1). However, looking at only one userpage this appears not to have significantly reduced the number of number of supercats (there are still 11, with only Category:User Cyrl going away). Hyacinth (talk) 00:38, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Looks like the problem is with the various User X-Y templates used by Template:Babel (for example Template:User en-N). Most if not all of those are categorized in their own category and the parent category of that (Category:User en-N and Category:User en). Hyacinth (talk) 06:43, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Someone else noticed this at Template_talk:User_en#Category:User_en. Hyacinth (talk) 06:46, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- The Supercat should not be there indeed. So it is OK now in this Userbox (scripts), but not in the language series. -DePiep (talk) 09:42, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- It appears that Template:Babel(?) still creates some redundant categories, such as with {{#babel:simple-3}}, which creates both Cat:User simple and Cat:User simple-3. Hyacinth (talk) 03:31, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
BelowOver at {{Babel}} I proposed to remove the en-N category from that template (for a different reason, not because of being a supercat).Your remarks still stand.-DePiep (talk) 10:53, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Resolved for this template, {{user iso15924}}. Supercat is removed. -DePiep (talk) 11:06, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Greek "script"?
[edit]{{user iso15924|Grek|2}} produces a userbox with the following text: "This user has an intermediate understanding of the Greek script." Why "script"? Why not "alphabet"? (For what it may be worth, "Greek script" redirects to "Greek alphabet".) — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 05:29, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Error messages for parameter#1 <> 4 chars and parameter#2 empty?
[edit]I'm no template guru but I've been working on red-linked categories, and I've come across several that are the result of incorrect use of this template. See the discussion I had over at User_talk:DePiep#Template:User_iso15924 for details but two main points have come up :
- Can parameter#1 be tested to see that it only has 4 characters (better still, letters) and if not, return a friendly error message, and better still withhold application of any categories other than a maintenance category? I've seen several instances of people trying to use this template to indicate ability at languages rather than scripts - see User:Kkhemet for an example.
- Can parameter#2 be assigned a default and/or error message if it is empty? It would stop ugly categories being created such as on User:Thekaleb
