Automatically populating archiveid

User:Anomie mentioned that it would be nice to automatically populate archiveid using {{subst:REVISIONID}} and found bugzilla:12694. It seems to be technically possible, but the behavior is inconsistent with REVISIONID and would need to be assigned to a new magic word. Flatscan (talk) 22:58, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Whitespace padding

Since the ids are unnamed template parameters, whitespace padding is preserved per m:Help:Newlines and spaces#Stripping on expansion. This padding is inserted into the links, breaking them. There are a number of simple techniques to manually strip the whitespace – I'll test them to find one that works.

Usage for incrementally archived pages?

The main use for this template that I've seen is for copy/paste archiving that's done all at once (i.e., the archive is created entirely at once and should have maybe three edits to the completed form). What I'm curious about is if it's recommended to use this for archives that are filled over a period of time, such as those created by the Miszabot series of archival bots (used at my user talk and WP:ANI). And if so, is an automated means of filling out this template feasible? I think it'd be really nice to be able to view the ANI archives and quickly access the relevant section of the live page's history. —/Mendaliv/^2¢/_Δ's/ 06:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, this template is unsuited for use on incremental archives, either bot or manual. A history link for each archiving run would work okay, but multiple archivings interfere with proper diffs. I have added this caveat to the documentation. One may manually edit &offset= history links to jump around the history, but my experience is that ANI has so many edits that getting close is sometimes difficult.
