'military designation' → 'main designation'

[edit]

My original example was admittedly not the best one, but I think there is a case for slightly broadening the meaning of this category to include non-military items. There are quite a few redirects to civilian aircraft, if not vehicles, that could well be described as R from manufacturer's designation, for example the ones redirecting to the main commercial name of the Cessna Citation family members: Cessna 500, Cessna 560 etc. Otherwise what category should they be put in? R from civilian manufacturer's designation or similar seems just redundant. --Deeday-UK (talk) 22:38, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, Deeday-UK, it's now easier to see what you meant. My only continuing concern is that "main" seems to be a very vague term. Is there a better term than "main" that can be used to describe the redirects' designations? If not, then "main" needs to be given a specific definition at least in the documentation, isn't that so? I would specify it as main military or commercial designation, possibly using official or most common instead of main. That would cover the broader meaning I had in mind. It could be further tweaked in future, if needed. --Deeday-UK (talk) 09:00, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Since I'm no expert, we should ask the template's creator, The Bushranger, to see if there were other intentions and such. Painius  22:03, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you mean User:The Bushranger. --Deeday-UK (talk) 22:34, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you! and oddly enough that's how this works for me sometimes – I make a faux pas that leads me to improvements of both Bushranger (disambiguation) and The Bushranger (disambiguation). Ain't WP grand? Painius  19:06, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The way you just worded it, Deeday-UK: This is a redirect from a manufacturer's designation to a more common military or commercial designation of an aircraft, vehicle, or other item. appears to be the best so far. Painius  19:38, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

And, belatedly - yes, that was about my intent for it. - The Bushranger One ping only 03:46, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
