Template talk:Non-free currency

Copyrighted currency?

I tried Google and I looked through more Wikipedia talk page archives than I can count but I couldn't find any discussion anywhere about images of currency being copyrighted and only being usable under fair use. Can someone educate me on this? US currency seems to be copyright free; are there countries where this is not the case and their money possesses a copyright enforceable under US law?

I would try asking the creator of this template but he seems to have, um, broken up with Wikipedia. — GT 21:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Please see commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Irish money for an example of money that (IMHO) possesses a copyright enforceable under US law. This template is screwed up.

Does it really make sense to have a template that's ambiguous about whether the item it applies to is public domain or free, yet categorizing it into non-free media like other fair use templates? —Random832 18:54, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Documentation

The documentation for this template really needs to include guidelines for when it should be applied. I have started the documentation page for this template with guidelines on how to evaluate copyright issues with images of currency. Unit of currency

A dollar is a pretty abstract thing; wouldn't it be better to say "This image depicts a banknote or coin" ? A Canadian $20 bill is 20 units of Canadian currency. I suppose it's a unit in the sense that it's one piece...a tooney must have both pieces to be considered a valid coin, though the individual pieces aren't $1 units. --Wtshymanski (talk) 15:37, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Is this for free or unfree files?

The name is "Non-free currency" but is says "Some currency designs are ineligible for copyright and are in the public domain. ..." and there is no {{Non-free media}} in this template. If this template is to be used on non-free currency then why is it not designed like other "non-free xxx"-templates?

Should be for non-free ones only I'd say, there are several other currency tags in Category:Currency copyright tags for use where appropriate. If I recall the use of this is rater a huge mess though. Historically it used to be just {{Money}} slapped indiscriminately on everything, so if anyone feels called to do some cleanup I'm sure there is some work to be done here... --Sherool (talk) 20:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
