Rename as Yen?

Given that the ¥ symbol also represents Chinese Renminbi, it may be preferable to rename this template as "Yen" which is less ambiguous. PC78 (talk) 20:36, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since Ren and Yen are both written as ¥, there would still be a conflict. Most of the other currency templates are named by the international recognised ISO 4217 currency code. The ISO 4217 code for the Renminbi is CNY (CN¥). The ISO 4217 code for the Japanese Yen is JPY. Its also easier to type.  Stepho  (talk) 01:52, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you misunderstood me? "Yen" is distinct from "Ren", so there would be no conflict. It wouldn't make much sense to use the ISO 4217 code, as this is not used in the template; compare {{CA$}} and {{CAD}}, for example. PC78 (talk) 16:03, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since these is no 'RMB' template and the equivalent 'CNY' template produces 'CN元' (ie does not produce '¥'), I remove my objection for renaming but I am not keen on 'yen' as the new name.
A counter case for your CA$/CAD example is the 'USD' template (which produces 'US$').
Also note that 'CA$' should not be used.
'JPY' is the official code, so it makes sense to use that as the template name and then have the template produce whatever the Japanese project decides is appropriate (eg 'JPY', 'JN¥', '¥', 'JP¥', 'Yen' or whatever).  Stepho  (talk) 05:20, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
{{USD}} redirects to {{US$}}, so that isn't a counter-argument at all, it actually validates what I'm saying. PC78 (talk) 19:10, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't follow. I thought your point was that you don't want to rename this template as 'JPY' because it didn't produce 'JPY'. {{USD}} doesn't produce 'USD'.  Stepho  (talk) 07:41, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page moved to {{Template:JPY}}. Vegaswikian (talk) 07:30, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:¥Template:Yen — Current title is ambiguous, as the same symbol is used for Renminbi. "Yen" is also easier to type than the symbol. PC78 (talk) 16:04, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support the move away from '¥' but would prefer to rename it as 'JPY'. Possibly we could have 'JPY' as the official name of the template and have 'yen' redirect to the 'JPY'. Note that the majority of other currency templates were created by me based on their ISO 4217 codes.  Stepho  (talk) 05:20, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Most people use the existing {{Yen}} template, which is just a redirection to this template.  Stepho  (talk) 07:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the name is changed, then the old name will just become a redirection to the new name. {{Yen}} already does this.  Stepho  (talk) 07:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Except that the current symbol, as mentioned in the above section, also means RMB (PRC currency) amongst others. 76.66.203.138 (talk) 08:33, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are two currencies which use the ¥ unicode glyph, namely Japanese yen (JP¥) and Renminbi (CN¥). Since {{CNY}} uses a CN¥ link, shouldn't {{JPY}} also use JP¥, instead of simply ¥? --benlisquareTCE 07:37, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good question! I've raised it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan#Currency templates.  Stepho  talk  12:10, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is a follow-on discussion at Template talk:CNY#Ambiguity with Japanese Yen about whether the {{CNY}} template should display '¥100' or 'RMB 100'. Please feel free to discuss it there.  Stepho  talk  13:11, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
