Template talk:Generative AI editnotice
Display on mobile
[edit]@InfiniteNexus: Thanks for unifying this into a single template!
The screenshot to the right is how this edit notice looks for me on my phone if I visit one of these talk pages while logged out and click "Add topic", and don't scroll the page. This would not slow me down if I was excited about talking to an AI. If anything a lazy skim reading of "welcome to participate" and the caution not to write questions or off-topic comments might encourage me!
I don't know if there's a style guide for edit notices, but in the AI case in particular where people believe that they've clicked through to the AI query interface, I think this would be more effective as a single short, bold sentence.
(I started a related discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)#Make the talk page "Add a topic" form clearer a while back about changing the weird Subject
and Description
text entry fields, which can't be helping matters on generative AI talk pages where "Description" makes it sound much more like it's asking me to describe the image I want to generate, than what message I want to share with other Wikipedia users.) Belbury (talk) 15:58, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- It used to be much shorter, but I liked what the folks at Talk:Chatbot were doing and tried to incorporate some of their wording. If you prefer the original, shorter version, we can revert to that. I'm also not sure what's going on with the mobile issue; I'll look into it. I thought editnotices popped up via a dialog box on mobile. InfiniteNexus (talk) 18:24, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- Perhaps it varies across browsers. No strong views on what's best here, but I have heard (someone says it at the pump link above) that the more text you give someone the less likely they are to read it.
- At least worth seeing what impact this edit notice has. If it's less than we'd hope, a shorter message might be worth a try. Belbury (talk) 18:35, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- I've adjusted it so that the mobile version omits the text from "If you would..." to "... Wikipedia:Questions". Is that better? InfiniteNexus (talk) 19:23, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
- Great idea to have a variant for mobile, didn't realise that was a possibility. Much better. It now starts

and I can see the rest of the text. Belbury (talk) 19:46, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
