Weimar Republic

[edit]

Can the country data template for the Weimar Republic be altered to allow the use of the merchant flag too. Thus {{flagicon|Weimar Republic|civil}} would proudce and that would link to the Weimar Republic article. Mjroots (talk) 17:13, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done, but wouldn't that request have been better placed on Template talk:Country data Weimar Republic with {{editprotected}} instead of here? I can't imagine this (placeholder) template is watched by anybody other than me! ;) — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:17, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I wasn't sure that the talk page of the individual country would get much attention seeing as it hasn't been created. If I knew how to do it myself I would have done it. Mjroots (talk) 17:24, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's the {{editprotected}} template that puts the page into Category:Wikipedia protected edit requests, and that category is patrolled by many admins, so that's how it attracts attention. I just happen to have a lot of these flag template pages on my watchlist because I do a lot of work for WP:WikiProject Flag Template. Update: page moved. I believe all functionality is maintained as template transclusions follow the redirects. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:48, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Country dataTemplate:Flag data – A large portion of sub-templates aren't countries. In addition, this would allow a central template for all types of flags to be used with the {{flagicon}} template. {{flagicon}} could be used to get out of using deprecated image syntax on 1981 Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final and other related articles. Under the current circumstances, an editor would need to put a football flag under a "Country data" template to avoid using deprecated syntax which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Technical discussion

[edit]

@Jon Kolbert: There is a large category tree structure under Category:Country data templates. See Category:Country data templates by type of entity, where we already have "country data" for cities, continents, international organizations, etc. Why not just add a category for "country data" for sports teams? Are you proposing to rename this entire category structure by replacing "country" with "flag"? That would involve moving a lot of categories to new names. Fore example, Template:Country data Budapest would move to Template:Flag data Budapest. At first glance, this seems like a lot of work. wbm1058 (talk) 17:22, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Wbm1058: That was the proposal, yes. I have enabled a mass-rename script that is often used on Commons so it shouldn't be too bad. I can go ahead and do the move when needed. Jon Kolbert (talk) 18:23, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jon Kolbert: So I suppose we can justify this under one of the Wikipedia:Categories for discussion § Speedy renaming and merging criteria? wbm1058 (talk) 18:45, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Wbm1058: The original move was supposed to apply to the templates listed in Category:All country data templates - but it didn't seem very reasonable to place 4773 "requested moves" tags by tagging each individual template. That's why the discussion was started here. Jon Kolbert (talk) 20:31, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jon Kolbert: While on the face of it this doesn't seem like it should be controversial, I'm concerned that the devil could be in the details, and this isn't a venue where there has been widespread participation. I see that my bot posted a notice about this request at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template#Template:Country data listed at Requested moves, but nobody in that WikiProject seems to have taken any notice of it. Another notice to that page that we're on the verge of implementation is in order. wbm1058 (talk) 20:55, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Wbm1058: Sounds good. Would you be able to put a notice there? I'm on mobile so it wouldn't be easy for me. Thanks. Jon Kolbert (talk) 21:14, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'll trust wbm1058's judgement on this. I saw the TE request and took at look at it, but I don't know this template system well enough to be sure I wouldn't break something (I mostly deal with pure MediaWiki parser templates, not the Lua-based scribunto modules).  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  05:19, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@JJMC89 and SMcCandlish: I'm not seeing any Lua modules used by this template system. The main trick used by this system is that it constructs sub-template names by using parameters that specify only a portion of the sub-template name. We can't change any of the parent templates until all the sub-templates are moved. wbm1058 (talk) 14:07, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I found Module:CountryData, Module:Flagg, and Module:Country listdata. I didn't do a comprehensive search, so there could be others. SiBr4 wrote them but doesn't seem to be active. — JJMC89(T·C) 17:10, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Using my test case (section below):
{{flagg}} works fine (follows the redirect) parameter "c" means "country":
*{{flagg||Albany, New York}}  Albany, New York
*{{flagg||Albuquerque}}  Albuquerque
*{{flagg|ixc|Albany, New York}} Albany, New York
*{{flagg|uxx|Albuquerque}}
{{country listdata}} seems to work fine too:
*{{country listdata|Albany, New York|Albuquerque}}
 Albany, New York
 Albuquerque
{{country listdata}} is not widely used, and seems only intended for template documentation pages. I noticed that the link to doesn't follow the redirect for Albany, New York. If that's an issue, I believe it can be fixed by changing this line in the module code: link = "["..mw.title.new(p):fullUrl("redirect=no").." "..p.."]"wbm1058 (talk) 18:16, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Testing 1–2–3

[edit]

The above uses Template:Country data Albany, New York behind the scenes. I believe that all pages using this template system will link to File:Flag of Albany, New York.svg, that would be these articles (I'm not going to worry about the many talk pages linking to that flag). If all of them still show the flag after I move the sub-template for Albany, then I don't believe I've broken anything. The system should just follow the redirect from Template:Country data Albany, New York to Template:Flag data Albany, New York. OK, I'm moving the page now, and will revert myself if I find anything broken. wbm1058 (talk) 14:28, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So far, the only thing I'm seeing that's broken is the auto-generated example usage in the Template:Flag data Albany, New York documentation. Need to trace where Template:Country data any, New York is coming from. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:26, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Country showdata generates the documentation. It uses {{str right}} to lop 13 characters off the front of "Flag data Albany, New York".
This works fine with "Country data" because that's 3 characters longer than "Flag data".
  • {{Str right|Country data Albany, New York|13}} → Albany, New York
  • {{Str right|Flag data Albany, New York|10}} → Albany, New York
We need to either patch Template:Country showdata or move Template:Flag data Albany, New York to an alternative name that's 3 characters longer. Hmm, given this is part of WP:FTP, Template:FlagFTP data Albany, New York? Or Template:Flag TP data Albany, New York (removing the redundant "F")? – wbm1058 (talk) 16:33, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are 36 instances of |13}}} in Template:Country showdata. This is the kind of redundancy a well-written Lua module can avoid. Template:Flag data -- Albany, New York? Template:Flag data of Albany, New York?
  • {{Str right|Flag data -- Albany, New York|13}} → Albany, New York
  • {{Str right|Flag data of Albany, New York|13}} → Albany, New York
Looking for some feedback. – wbm1058 (talk) 16:56, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It makes sense to me that the Flag of Albany, New York would have Flag data of Albany, New York. So I just moved it. That fixed the truncation issue, but now I see that it isn't following the redirect. wbm1058 (talk) 18:29, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, just needed to do a page purge. Looking good so far. I'll pause work for a while to make sure that everyone is on board with my approach to this so far. – wbm1058 (talk) 18:42, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note regarding this RM. The tweak above I made to fix the length-of-name inconsistency implies this move will now be Template:Country dataTemplate:Flag data ofwbm1058 (talk) 18:47, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It should be pretty easy to change the instances of {{str right}} to something that works with prefixes of varying lengths. E.g.,
  • {{#invoke:String|replace|Template:Country data Albany, New York|^Template:%w+ data |||false}} → Albany, New York
  • {{#invoke:String|replace|Template:Flag data Albany, New York|^Template:%w+ data |||false}} → Albany, New York
Not ideal to parse the same Lua module 36 times (converting the whole Country showdata template to Lua would definitely be a good thing), but it's definitely not necessary for any new naming scheme to have the same number of characters as the current.
Alternatively, I don't know if this has been considered, but a subpage format like Template:Flag data/Albany, New York would, among other advantages, make it trivial for the documentation template to get the entity name using {{SUBPAGENAME}} (or {{#titleparts}} in order to work with the few templates with slashes in the name, like Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol). SiBr4 (talk) 21:21, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, SiBr4. Some good stuff to consider. Looking at Template:Country showdata, I see that on 16 May 2014 you extracted the template name from the page title so the {{{templatename}}} parameter is no longer necessary (but kept that parameter for now), while creating a tracking category for templates with {{{templatename}}} Category:Country data templates with templatename parameter, which was speedy deleted on 10 May 2016 per your request, because "Tracking category no longer needed". You also removed the templatename tracking category, but the {{{templatename}}} is still there (36 instances). Is it safe now to simplify that template by removing this deprecated parameter? Though in the case of Country data Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, it is necessary to specify the templatename, to override the Flag data default. If we use {{#invoke:String|replace| in lieu of {{SUBPAGENAME}} then we don't need {{{templatename}}} and remove the hard-coded |13}} which allows for flexible-length names that simply match the pattern and can include a / in the name. wbm1058 (talk) 15:18, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Changing {{BASEPAGENAME}} to {{PAGENAME}} (which includes subpages) would fix the slash problem in Country showdata, so that |templatename= is no longer necessary in the Trentino template. I probably used BASEPAGENAME at the time to exclude the "/sandbox" suffix of sandbox templates, although the result is that their automatic examples actually invoke their parent templates instead of the sandbox versions, so even for those PAGENAME would be preferable.
|templatename= isn't used in any other template (I checked by running through all of them in AWB). Trentino is also the only template for which this all matters, since the only other templates with a slash in the name (other than "/doc", "/sandbox" or "/testcases" subpages) are redirects (namely French Guiana/Guyane (France) and Kosovo/Kosova) and therefore don't use the documentation template. So the parameter can be safely removed once the template is fixed for Trentino. SiBr4 (talk) 17:35, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So the Lua pattern %w+ data allows for any set of ASCII alphanumeric characters followed by " data", thus the phrase "Flag data of" isn't matched. While I was warming up to its grammatical correctness, the original request was for simply "Flag data" so I've moved Template:Flag data of Albany, New York back to Template:Flag data Albany, New York. wbm1058 (talk) 12:02, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. I forgot the Albany template had been moved to "Flag data of" when I made the edit to Country showdata, and thought the change itself made the alternative proposals (which assumed the length of the prefix had to stay at 13) moot. FWIW, due to the limitedness of Lua patterns (to be exact, their lack of alternation and inability to apply the ? quantifier to groups), it doesn't seem possible to match "Flag data of" with the same pattern as "Country data"/"Flag data", meaning two separate pattern replacements would be required in order to work with the "of" naming scheme. Technical issues aside, I'd definitely prefer "Flag data" to "Flag data of", as I'm not seeing any advantage of correct grammar above briefness for data templates that are never directly used, and I've seen few to no other non-article templates use such naming. CIA WFB flags

Can someone remove the CIA WFB flags in the country data templates? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.26.52.87 (talk) 16:13, 18 December 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]

These CIA flags are just copies of the SVG flags, but with a worse quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.26.52.87 (talk) 16:30, 18 December 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]
Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. The WFB flags at {{Country data United Kingdom}} are all .svg files, and I'm sure better versions of any gifs could be made. Changing name of a country

How to change the default size of a country data flagimage?

[edit]

How do you change the default file size for a Template:Country data flagimage? Asking because the default size for most is 23px (plus 2px for the border) but some countries' are smaller (such as Denmark), which results in misaligned flag icons in columns. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 08:27, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Illegitimate Barrister: Please check this link where I have set the size for a flag. If you have seen my edit, please revert it as it is not needed. Adithyak1997 (talk) 11:08, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I was referring specifically to the template side, so as to set the default size automatically. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 11:42, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that's the default thumb size for flags. I guess I'd need to see a specific example for clarification, because the country data templates are all over the place and some call one group while others call a different one... {{flag data}} has a |size= parameter, so you could set it as {{{size|23px}}}. {{Country showdata}}, which is used in places like {{Country data Denmark}}, just uses thumb. Primefac (talk) 12:37, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I tried that for Denmark in its sandbox and it worked for what I wanted, but a side effect was that it removed the size adjust parameter altogether. Specifically, an example of the problem can be seen here. Note how the UK and Danish flags are not the same width. I want to have the Danish flag be set to 23px wide default without having to do any extra markup articleside, while still retaining the "size=" capability. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 20:18, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 25 October 2019

[edit]

Please consider adding a pthe field to be used as default by Template:Flagg for each country when creating flag links. This would enable the same code to be used uniformly across a list of countries, without having to rely on editors to make sure they put the in the specific countries that require it. For instance:

… instead of:

Once this is done here, we could logic in Template:Flagg to use the country-specific pthe default set here, if it's not explicitly specified by the editor. Guarapiranga (talk) 05:47, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This might be reinventing the wheel. See Template:Europe topic, which calls Template:iso2country with |article=yes in order to get the country name with "the" as needed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:48, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like indeed it is, Jonesey95. How can we graft that logic in Template:Europe topic onto Template:Flagg? Cheers. Guarapiranga (talk) 21:27, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not done for now: It looks like there is another mechanism for the same. If you should choose to reactivate this request because the other way is not feasible, please provide suggested implementation (sandboxing) and test cases. Izno (talk) 17:37, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at the sandbox versions at Template:Flag+link/testcases, and definitely add other possible variations if you want to test things out. Even if you don't know much about templates, it should be pretty easy to figure out the pattern on the testcases page and copy/paste to make new ones. If that new version looks good to you, I can make it live. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:19, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Jonesey95. After trying a few combinations, finally added a couple more conditional statements to the function for the cases in which "the" is already in the prefix, or that the target page uses the country name in the argument rather than the standard ISO one. Now, does that need to be replicated for each flag template, or is it automatically incorporated into the {{flagg}} module once it goes live? (I was actually surprised {{flag+link}} is a legacy template; I thought all those flag templates were particular calls to {{flagg}}) Guarapiranga (talk) 21:31, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know enough about Lua module coding to know how we would implement a similar change to Module:Flagg. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:22, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, Jonesey95. I caught that "IE" curveball you through in the testcases with yet another conditional statement. See if its ready for live. Cheers. Guarapiranga (talk) 02:33, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think in one of my previous versions, it was taking in "IE" or another ISO abbreviation and rendering "Ireland" or the equivalent full country name. That's what I was trying to make it do, but now I honestly don't remember. Maybe having the template accept ISO country codes or full country names is too much to ask. In any event, I think the current sandbox version is ready to be deployed so that we can see what weird edge cases turn up. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:47, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 25 January 2024

[edit]

Description of suggested change: At the 2024 IWBF Asia-Oceania Championships they had a composite team that played under the Asia-Oceania Zone. To avoid ugly red Template:Country data AOZ marks everywhere, I need flag data for the team. They played under the File:International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (emblem).jpg but a blank white logo would be okay.

Hawkeye7 (discuss) 04:41, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hawkeye7, this might be a dumb question, but as a one-off team, would it not make sense to just not use {{wbkw}} and just type out the name? Primefac (talk) 08:09, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not a dumb question. Thanks for implementing this solution. I thought that maybe it would simply be a matter of adding a single entry to a table. I don't know whether this is a one-off or not, so will close the request and revisit the issue if it recurs. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 18:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With this particular template family/group, it would require making an entirely new template. That being said, it has made me think about some of the internal structures of a few of these sports-related templates, which I will look at to make changes like this a bit easier in the future (especially if one-off teams end up being repeats). Primefac (talk) 19:18, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Primefac, Hawkeye7, any reason to not just add a switch to Template:Women's national wheelchair basketball team to take care of this single case? not having Template:Country data AOZ permanently in Special:WantedTemplates would be great. Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or just replace the template call with a redlink... Primefac (talk) 17:05, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tried that; it was too messy. Will pursue Frietjes' suggestion if the problem recurs. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:17, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Description of suggested change:

Set the default size to be 25x17px to account for the fact that border is set to empty.

Currently if two {{flagicon}} are used, but one is empty, it looks like this:

  • Canada Normal
  • Placeholder

Notice how the word "Placeholder" is 2 pixels to the left of "Normal".

With the change, it would look like this:

In actuality, when the function is called by {{flagicon}}, providing a default for the size parameter does not work since a blank sized is always passed in. In addition, MediaWiki:Minerva.css#L-39 means setting the width to 25px does nothing on mobile.

Description of suggested change:

Instead of trying to replicate the border by expanding the width, manually add a transparent border with TemplateStyles.

Tests:

To help with testing, I created a redirect to the sandbox at Template:Country data /sandbox so these changes can now be tested directly with {{flagicon}}.

I haven't dug into the code, but given the challenges with skins, would using File:Flag placeholder.svg be a better workaround for this situation? – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:29, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
File:Flag placeholder.svg is already used, but unlike other flag icons, the border is disabled because it's not transparent like the image. From a code search, all skins used on Wikipedia use a 1px border, so skin compatibility isn't an issue. BrandonXLF (talk) 16:45, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BrandonXLF I'm not sure adding additional bytes of output is a great idea considering how easy it is already to make a page exceed the WP:PEIS limit with flag templates. @Ahecht That was my original idea until I found out about the max-width set at MediaWiki:Minerva.css#L-39. If MediaWiki:Minerva.css#L-39 is adjusted to set a max-width of 23px (as suggested in the original Phabricator ticket) then that should work for the vast majority of uses. BrandonXLF (talk) 18:24, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the above discussion with @Ahecht, the best course of action is to simply fix the initial edit request. Template-protected edit request on 23 April 2024

[edit]

Please make it so that Ambazonia goes to the page about the state. Kxeon (talk) 16:36, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Primefac (talk) 16:51, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Specifically, make it so that the country data of Ambazonia doesn't redirect to the Southern Cameroons, but rather goes to the current rebel entity of Ambazonia, as that is what the term is mostly, if not always used for.
(Simplified more: Change the country data of Ambazonia to be separate from the Southern Cameroons; make it's flag data the Federal Republic of Ambazonia's flag data.)
(Simplified even more: Make the country data of Ambazonia it's own page) [Sorry. I couldn't think of how to make it the "Change X to Y" format, so I tried the best I could to get it as close to that with the even more simplified version.] Kxeon (talk) 01:11, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are making a request at the wrong page. I think you want to put this request at Template talk:Country data Ambazonia, or edit Template:Country data Ambazonia to be a country data template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:02, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Country data Example

[edit]

Country data Example has some 350 uses in the mainspace. I'd guess a predominant use is for flag icons (where "blank" is the input). Should this be used in main space, and if yes, should it link to the Main page? Izno (talk) 17:11, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like this usage is incorrect in article space; these people do not represent a country with a white flag. Template:noflag should probably be used instead. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:57, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we have a template to give "no flag" then I'm in favour of using that template/use case. Linking to the Main Page is... weird. Primefac (talk) 13:58, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have gotten the transclusion count down to 230 with a few template edits. Many of the usages appear to contravene MOS:SPORTFLAG, which states that sports participants should not have national flags next to their names unless they are competing as part of their national team. Examples: 1983 All Japan Endurance Championship (and many other motorsport race articles), 2023 Vuelta a España (and many other cycling race articles), WTA Elite Trophy (and many other tennis articles). Maybe I misunderstand that part of MOS, but its words look pretty clear to me. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:04, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed Main page from the link, since it makes no sense. There is a red error message in the template documentation now, but the template works fine. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:17, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
