Soft Blocking

[edit]

As a result of Tim Starling's recent work on MediaWiki Bug 550, it's now possible to soft block IP addresses. I propose to change the middle of the first paragraph so it reads: "Applying an infinite block of this IP is not appropriate, unless it is a soft block, because the IP address will later be reallocated...". Comments? --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 18:05, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the absence of objections, I've made the changes. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 10:19, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RSS feeds?

[edit]

Why not mention on this template the ability to subscribe to an RSS feeds like sharedip and sharedipedu does? GO-PCHS-NJROTC (talk) 00:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant?

[edit]

Is this banner redundant to isp? I think there are is at least significant overlap in the applicability, and those places where this would be appropriate and ISP not would be covered by sharedIP. Any thoughts? —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 22:22, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a fine line between a dynamic IP and a shared IP; shared IPs have many users on them at the same time whereas dynamic IPs are only used by one user or organization at a time, but may be reassigned to an unrelated party at a later time. Some shared IPs are dynamic, and vice versa, but they are not the same. There is a good chance that you're own IP at home is dynamic; many residential IPs are, including mine. Indeed, I agree it's not redundant to sharedip, but what of its relation to isp? My best understanding is that isp is a specific case of dynamicIP, which probably covers a great deal of them. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 19:48, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 22 December 2012

[edit]

Do something about it so the internal link at the end of first paragraph doesn't break when the first parameter includes brackets/an internal link. 194.150.65.56 (talk) 23:30, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: There does not appear to be a problem with the template. Could you be more specific please? Consensus will also need to be clear before this request can be implanted. TBrandley 23:34, 23 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the talk page here and the end of the first paragraph inside the template. The link is messed up because the first parameter is a wikilink. I think there's some other way to fix this besides "don't use wikilinks in the parameter". --194.150.65.38 (talk) 00:08, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading statement

[edit]

Would the text:

In response to vandalism from this IP address, abuse reports may be sent to its network administrator for investigation.

be better phrased as:

In the event of vandalism from this IP address, abuse reports can be sent to its network administrator for investigation.

?

The way it is phrased currently may lead a reader to believe that (someone is claiming that) there has already been vandalism from that IP. Links to user confusion available on request. Bovlb (talk) 22:15, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WMF splinetools is no longer functional

[edit]

The links related to hostname/IP-address no longer work. This template needs to be updated. 80.221.159.67 (talk) 08:36, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This was mentioned here - I've recreated the tool: https://tools.wmflabs.org/myrcx/about. All that needs to be changed is any line which states :toollabs:splinetools/whois/ip/ to :toollabs:myrcx/whois/ip/ (eg. https://tools.wmflabs.org/myrcx/whois/ip/80.221.159.67) -- samtar talk or stalk 08:48, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Samtar: I see no one responded at WP:VPT or here (your message was too mild!), so I had a go at making the edit. Before saving, I tested it with User talk:80.221.159.67. The two links after "Your host" were shown as:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/myrcx/whois/domain/dsl-olubrasgw1-50dd9f-67.dhcp.inet.fi
https://tools.wmflabs.org/myrcx/whois/ip/80.221.159.67
The second link worked but the first gave this result:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
Either the server is overloaded or there is an error in the application.
I did not save the edit. Please have a look. If you don't want to edit the template yourself I am happy to do it. Johnuniq (talk) 00:54, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fix errors introduced by Special:Diff/749734925

[edit]

Currently, the template says:

(Note: Sometimes, due to vandalism, you may be temporarily unable to register.

It should say:

(Note: Sometimes, due to vandalism, you may be temporarily unable to register.)

The template also says:

<span style="font-size: 85%; line-height: 120%">Review contributions carefully if blocking this IP address or reverting its contributions. If a block is needed, administrators should consider a soft block using Template:Anonblock.</div>

Template Protected Edit Request on 2 March 2019

[edit]

The WHOIS links for the template errors out and the sole maintainer is sporadically active. Could someone switch the URL to https://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/gateway.py?lookup=true&ip=(insert IP here). See this diff to help explain what I mean. Kb03 (talk) 05:55, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done @Kb03: (see also note at Template talk:Mobile IP - sandbox this first, then go ahead and reactivate the request. — xaosflux Talk 01:10, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please replace Create an account! with Create an account!, so that "Create an account" links to the page to create an account.

Please also change registering an account! to registering an account! for the same reason (registering an account is the same as creating one).

Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 22:03, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please remove the line break before the <noinclude> tag, which adds an extra blank line in transcluding pages. --27.55.66.203 (talk) 07:45, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The current links to the WHOIS information do not work and lead to a 503 error. It should be replaced with the https://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/gateway.py?lookup=true&ip= link instead. If you want me to test the new changes in the sandbox first, I can do so. --Streetlampguy301 (talk) 01:19, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
