HLIST
[edit]I recently modified this template, inline with WP:HLIST, in order to make it more accessible and standards-complaint (as outlined on that meta page). I have been reverted with the edit summary "looks awful", which seems rather unnecessary, given that the template is usually collapsed. We shouldn't let visual dressing trump such issues; and the defualt navbox appearance is used on thousands of articles. - I think you might want to center it, using html, and just use the list para., instead of the group one. --Funandtrvl (talk) 21:36, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- I attempted a new version [1]. it may be possible to get the dots to go away on the first line, but I didn't make any serious attempts. One way to do this would be to stick it all inside a table, and right justify the lines, but center the table. Frietjes (talk) 21:46, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- Why can't we use the entire width of the template, instead of having a narrow block in the center of it? --bender235 (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- You'd just have to adjust the default parameters from Template:Navbox that are setting the font-size, etc. --Funandtrvl (talk) 21:50, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Are you talking about formatting it something like this version in the sandbox? Frietjes (talk) 21:56, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- here is another version [2], which fairly closely matches the format before the conversion to hlist. Frietjes (talk) 21:54, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- The only problem is that there needs to be a forced space in front of 1889, where the bullet would be. To get rid of the blank space, you'd either have to format it like your sandbx version, or make 2 columns using navbox|child and navbox with columns. --Funandtrvl (talk) 22:00, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I agree that the inner table, with text-align:right is a hack, but it was the only way I could come up with to match the old format. I actually like the sandbox version. it's much more compact with less whitespace, and no redundant group labels. Frietjes (talk) 22:16, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you, but that's not valid list markup. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:51, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- which one isn't valid list markup? Frietjes (talk) 23:24, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- The template is 2 columns in Mozilla, but only 1 column in IE9, so this still needs to be fixed. Also, in the first line the 1889 is still a notch to the left and is not aligned with the column. --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:52, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- how about if we just get rid of the multirow format and go with one list [3]? I think this is a better format, since it's more concise and doesn't have the line wrapping problem on narrow screens, and has less whitespace on wider displays. Frietjes (talk) 17:58, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- It's OK with me, that would solve some problems with the different browsers. --Funandtrvl (talk) 18:07, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- The version linked in the comment to which I replied; though there have been several changes since. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:10, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
