CC 3.0 includes a clause on preserving the author's "moral rights" in reproduced use, and thus may not be free. east.718 at 18:22, August 10, 2007

(e/c)(non-admin comment) I think this is a misunderstanding, and that the text needs to stay in the template. When the template is used correctly, on a File/Image page, the text does not appear; but if anyone tries to use the template in another mainspace, the message warns them that they have used the template wrongly. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:03, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images of non-free works

I've implemented a tweak in the sandbox version, namely {{#ifeq:|{{{dw|no}}}|no|{{free media}}|}} instead of coding {{free media}} directly. Specfiying dw=yes will supress the categorisation in Category:All free media, for derivative works where the subject shown is non-free, and thus can't be moved to Commons.

It would be appreciated if this straightforward change was implemented in the main template.

Not done: These changes wouldn't make any difference to how the template was parsed, but on the other hand, they would take up server resources. The WMF has a big enough server farm that re-rendering 65,000 file information pages is just a drop in the bucket, but we should probably still only make changes that make an actual difference. — Mr. Stradivarius ^{♪ talk ♪} 16:02, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done Anomalocaris, I made this change, but I don't know that we really need to fix obsolete HTML Linter errors. We should have a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Linter.

Jonesey95: I realize that obsolete HTML is a low-priority lint error, but when we have the opportunity to fix a template, I think we should. My expertise is more on fixing lint errors than knowing what templates are intended to do. On User:Diamonddavej this template is used under one of two Licensing headings. On that page, the template takes effect in the lower right corner, where there is a box that says, "This image has been (or is hereby) released into the ..."
