Edit request to complete TfD nomination

Template:Archive bottom has been listed at Templates for discussion (nomination), but it was protected, so it could not be tagged. Please add:
{{subst:tfm|help=off|1=DRN archive bottom}}
to the top of the page to complete the nomination. Thank you. –MJL ‐Talk‐☖ 18:34, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- Done. If the TfD's closer is not a sysop/TPE, feel free to ping me and I'll remove the notice. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 18:56, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Tamzin: Could you wrap it in noinclude tags? Right now the TfD notice is getting substituted with each substitution, as this template is often substituted. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:44, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Tol: Fixed. Sorry about that. Didn't realize anyone substs this. P.S., why aren't you a TPE? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 19:02, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Tamzin: No problem; thanks! Now that you mention it, I should probably get around to applying for template editor. Interestingly, my account is one year old as of today, so I barely fulfill criterion 1 of the guideline (though it's probably taken with a grain of IAR). Code missing post-merge
[edit]There is no code in this template to close the table. Since {{DRN archive bottom}} was merged here, shouldn't the code be added here so that archiving functions properly? —C.Fred (talk) 01:24, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
- No.
{{archive top}}
doesn't open a table, so this must not close one either. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:09, 16 January 2022 (UTC)- {{DRN archive top}} does. Should we add a DRN parameter to include a the close if invoked from a DRN?
{{Archive bottom|DRN=yes}}
That would fix the problem inside the template instead of requiring manual code outside. —C.Fred (talk) 23:20, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- {{DRN archive top}} does. Should we add a DRN parameter to include a the close if invoked from a DRN?
Substitution

Hello. Could someone please provide the relevant instructions regarding the substitution of this template and possibily tag it with {{always substitute}} if it should be always substituted? Thank you. --TadejM my talk 04:18, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- @TadejM: Not done:
{{edit template-protected}}
is usually not required for edits to the documentation or categories of templates using a documentation subpage. Use the 'edit' link at the top of the green "Template documentation" box to edit the documentation subpage. It can be substed, and you would do this in the same manner as any other template, see WP:SUBST. When would people want to do that as opposed to leaving it as a transcluded template? I also don't see why it should always be substed. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:30, 24 February 2023 (UTC)- Hello, Redrose64. I asked for someone else to edit the /doc page because I was not acquainted with the use of this template regarding substitution. 'RM bottom' redirects here and 'RM top' should always be substituted, so I thought perhaps 'Archive bottom' alias 'RM bottom' should be too. Thank you for providing the info – I will add it. --TadejM my talk 12:33, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- This is the talk page for Template:Archive bottom, you didn't say that you were thinking of a completly different template. I see now that Template:RM bottom redirects to Template:Archive bottom (I don't know why that should be). In most cases, "bottom" templates are either undocumented, or share their documentation with the corresponding "top" page; and the same goes for their talk pages. So the page to edit would be Template:RM top/doc and if you needed to discuss it, it should have been at Template talk:RM top. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:28, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- I have now added the {{substitution}} tag with the instruction in line with {{RM top}} and WP:RMCLOSE. This template's documentation should also provide the instructions for the {{RM bottom}} tag as long as it redirects here. I would agree to have them separated though and a common /doc page implemented for both {{RM top}} and {{RM bottom}}. --TadejM my talk 06:05, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Not for anything editor TadejM, but it looks like that /doc page you restored at Template:Archive bottom/doc is not used anywhere and should be redirected back to the one that is actually used by the {{Archive bottom}} template: Template:Archive top/doc. The "Archive top and bottom" templates are not subst. and the subst. of the "RM bottom" is amply described in the /doc for {{RM top}}.
- It had been decided [back in 2020] to merge RM bottom into Archive bottom, which [explains the redirect ]. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 06:45, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Paine. At the moment, {{Archive bottom/doc}} is transcluded in {{Archive bottom}}, so it is in use. I see there was a discussion back in 2020, but perhaps we should have another look at this. I must agree with Andy Mabett that "Having {{RM top}} paired with {{Archive bottom}} would be confusing." It is confusing, which is also evident from the preceding discussion. {{RM top}} should naturally be paired with {{RM bottom}} as should {{Archive top}} be paired with {{Archive bottom}}. They can have a common core if required. I find it great that {{RM top}} includes the instruction for {{RM bottom}}, but it is not the place where I was looking for this instruction nor was it clear enough. Template instructions should customarily be provided at their /doc pages and should be explicit. It is true though that the two templates are used in combination so that's why I have proposed a common doc page for them. --TadejM my talk 07:05, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- I have undone your edits to Template:Archive bottom and Template:Archive bottom/doc. Archive bottom should share documentation with Template:Archive top - they are used together, they should be kept synchronised, there is no need to split doc into separate pages especially when one advises substitution and the other doesn't. The documentation for Template:RM bottom should - and indeed is - found at Template:RM top/doc. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:07, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Noted. It is fine. I will make the information at Template:RM top/doc more explicit. --TadejM my talk 18:24, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
