This template can be used to provide comparative, at-a-glance information on meteorite subdivisions.

Meteorite classification is a complex, ever evolving field with inconsistent use of terminology. This template sidesteps the complexity by providing fields for both the name of the subdivision being described and the technical term from meteorite classification that best fits it.

Subdivision is an unofficial term used here to avoid the ambiguity inherent to "Group", "Type", etc. and to "Classification" in this context.

Subdivision	The meteorite classification term that applies, most likely one of Type/Class/Clan/Group/Subgroup/Grouplet/Duo/... Note that this must be entered as a proper noun for the template to work; initial capital letter followed by lower case. In addition to appearing at the top of the Infobox, this field places the article into Category:Meteorite <subdivision>s.
Name	The official name of the meteorite subdivision without any abbreviation; likely to be in Table 1 below.
Alternative_names	Comma separated alternative names.
Image	Name of an example image of the subdivision without "File:" or any other wikitext (e.g. Willamette Meteorite AMNH.jpg).
Image_caption	Most captions draw attention to something in the image that is not obvious, such as its relevance to the text. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions.
Image_alt_text	Description of the image for visually impaired readers. See Wikipedia:Alternative text for images.
Compositional_type	Set to Iron if describing a subdivision of the Iron meteorites or Stony if describing a subdivision of the Iron meteorites.
Type	Choose from the first column of Table 1 below.
Class	Choose from the middle column of Table 1 below.
Clan	A clan name from a referenced source.
Group	Likely to be in the last column of Table 1 below.

Petrologic_type	See petrologic type; may be more than one.
Number_of_specimens	The number of known specimens of this group.
TKW	Total known weight, e.g. 300 kg.
