Shitterton
[edit]- ...
that Shitterton (old sign pictured) has beaten Scratchy Bottom and Brokenwind for the title of worst place name in Britain?
5x expanded by Prioryman (talk). Self nom at 09:40, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Don't worry about the red link in the hook above - I'll fill that in shortly. Prioryman (talk) 09:51, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Nice article. However, whilst the nomination of Brokenwind is clearly verifiable the only thing I can see on the OS map is Brokenwynd, (which has a different meaning and pronunciation and is a farm rather than a settlement). I doubt it is worthy of an article of its own unless you can find some more detail. It might be simpler to add something to Newmachar. Ben MacDui 11:09, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Good idea, done. Prioryman (talk) 14:58, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
- This is an excellent April Fool's hook, IMO, though it isn't at all misleading, if that's required for inclusion? I have duplicated the Evening Standard reference which also supports the hook and seems more reliable than the travel site. The article is interesting and is adequately supported by reliable sources. The image has an appropriate license. DYKcheck is complaining that the 5-fold expansion began ~150 days ago, but the recent expansion seems to me to be adequate, and in any case it would meet the April Fool's rule. Espresso Addict (talk) 00:37, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- OK, how about this for an alternative? Prioryman (talk) 08:07, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that Shitterton (old sign pictured) has been on the Shitter for a thousand years?
- Sorry to be the party pooper, but the source seems to say "Shiter" & this is also what Keith Briggs' website says.[1] Perhaps we can do some April Fool's Day handwaving?
- Or perhaps the OED can help: "shitter", "shytter" and "shiter" are all given as alternative spellings, so I think it's ok :) Espresso Addict (talk) 09:39, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think I might have found a better alternative: it turns out that the stream is now known as the Piddle (seriously!), so the "Shitter" name might not be apposite. I'll suggest another hook. Prioryman (talk) 20:02, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
ALT2: ... that Shitterton (old sign pictured) is on the Piddle?
- It's on the Bere Stream, a tributary of the Piddle. Peter James (talk) 20:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the correction. It's correct to say that it's in the Piddle Valley though, isn't it? Prioryman (talk) 20:53, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- That seems to be correct, though the only mentions I can find are in the tabloids. I'd prefer ALT3 or the original hook. Peter James (talk) 23:52, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Agree with Peter James that the stream appears now to be called the Bere Stream, according to the OS. I'd prefer not to dabble in calling it the Piddle Valley unless you can find a reliable source that does so, when there are plenty of other strong hooks. - I wonder, thinking about it, whether a variant of my original hook might work better, along the following lines. Prioryman (talk) 22:32, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- ALT3: ... that Shitterton has been considered to be worse than a Scratchy Bottom or Brokenwind?
- Alt3 looks fine, and more in the April Fool's spirit than the original hook. Espresso Addict (talk) 06:37, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
