The long caption for the 1652 Pine Tree Shilling

[edit]

I think the description of the words on the obverse are mostly wrong, and IGNORE a letter!

The caption now states the words on the obverse are MASATH SETS IN.

But this completely ignores the “V” in between MASATH and SETS. The top of the V is worn off, but the bottom is unmistakable.

I suggest a much better interpretation on the inscription is: MASATHVSETS [ i.e., Massachusetts ], making the whole inscription MASATHVSETS • IN.

As to what the “IN” denotes, I don’t know. Perhaps it has something to with New England. Alpine Joy (talk) 15:31, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
