Wilfrid or Wilfred?
[edit]The New York Times couldn't get it straight either.
- INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 19. -- Wilfrid Bourque and Harry Holcombe Lose Lives on Indianapolis Speedway's First Day.
- SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug. 19. -- Wilfred Bourque, killed in Indianapolis to-day, was nearly 30 years old...
- INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Aug. 27. -- The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Company's officers are held responsible by Coroner Blackwell for the deaths of William Bourque and Harry Holcomb...
This fairly official-looking site favors "William" (so good page move here) but says name is "Wilfred". – wbm1058 (talk) 00:08, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Checking the Ngrams...
- Ngrams not found: Wilfrid Bourque, Wilfred Bourque — oh yes, William is COMMONNAME
- No results found for "wilfrid bourque". Did you mean: "wilfred bourque"
- Looks like the national paper of record had an accident on August 20, 1909 – the front-page "Wilfrid" headline seems to be the outlier – "Urefrid [sic] Bourque of Springfield, Mass., driver of Knox Car No. 3. and..." – a car wreck. – wbm1058 (talk) 03:22, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
