Whom is it named for?
[edit]Why was the name "Wayne" applied to this national forest? CountMacula (talk) 23:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- It is apparently named for "Mad" Anthony Wayne. [1] Bitmapped (talk) 00:58, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, Bitmapped. I have added a link to the Forest Service's list of origins of the Forest names, which I found by following your lead. I am inclined to remove your link to the Athens Messenger article unless you object.CountMacula (talk) 01:08, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
Potential renaming of the forest? (June 2024)
[edit]So I think the information on the potential renaming of the forest from 2023 isn’t needed unless it’s officially been renamed is because there is many examples such as the stellar’s jay or Lewis’s woodpecker and many other birds for example that haven’t Been renamed and haven’t gotten their potential renaming mentioned about in their respective Wikipedia articles even though the American Ornithological Society did vow to potentially rename every bird in the Americas, the thick-billed longspur was however officially renamed and it’s renaming is mentioned in the article.
In my opinion, we should go with the same approach as well for this article, unless it has been renamed, none of the potential renaming proposals should be mentioned in this article 94.204.244.111 (talk) 21:07, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- Numerous experienced editors appear to agree that this is notable and properly sourced. WP:OTHERCONTENT is generally not a convincing argument. --ZimZalaBim talk 21:16, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- I doubt many people have any knowledge about the persons for whom the birds were named, while Anthony Wayne is a fairly famous figure in American history. Given that the current name was chosen to honor Wayne's actions, the proposal to remove that honor has far more significance than the OAS proposals. Indyguy (talk) 21:50, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
