On 26 August 2023, it was proposed that this article be moved from Waipa District Council to Waipā District Council. The result of the discussion was moved. |
Need to move
[edit]The Waipā District Council now spells its name with a macron (see official website link), and since they're the authority on what their own name is we should move the article to reflect this (with a redirect from the old name of course). The Māori name's Waipa does not include a macron, probably because the Waipa District (name made official back in 1989) does not. No doubt this will be rectified in time, as has happened with other District Councils around NZ, but in the meantime the local body can certainly decide how it wants to spell its own name. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 00:36, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- Agree. WDC has asked for a simpler and cheaper way to change its name. A Google news search finds 37,500 using Waipā, but only 13,300 using Waipa and many of the latter results include Waipā. Johnragla (talk) 00:44, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oh that's interesting: the macron and name change is actually a significant story in itself; worth discussing and citing in the article. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 01:22, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Waipa District Council → Waipā District Council – The official name by LINZ calls this the Waipa District, but the council and media all include a macron. I think we can make an exception to WP:NCNZ like we did for the Kāpiti Coast District. Panamitsu (talk) 04:45, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:USEENGLISH, as the proposed version does not even show up on the Google Ngrams. Rreagan007 (talk) 05:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Rreagan007 Because google ngrams are outdated. These name changes have only occurred in the past 10 years. WP:TOHUTO. WP:USEENGLISH is invalid as per Taupō and other articles. Panamitsu (talk) 06:13, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Rreagan007 I forgot to mention that the council itself uses a macron. See [1] Panamitsu (talk) 06:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- Support Waipā River has already been changed and councils and most media use the macron. Johnragla (talk) 07:14, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- Support per widespread usage of the macron, including by the council itself. WP:USEENGLISH is irrelevant as macron usage is widespread in NZ English and the move request is proposing it precisely because Waipā with a macron is being used in English. Turnagra (talk) 02:31, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
