I don't get it, are they flagellates or algae? Surely they can't be both.

Apparently they really are both. see http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/103/5/1353 for an interesting paper on the effect of flagella on nutrient uptake. In this paper, the illumination level (that supports phototrophy) is carefully documented for the experiments.

VolvocalesChlamydomonadales – Chlamydomonadales redirects to Volvocales, but based on my checks, I believe Chlamydomonadales is the more correct/accepted name. NCBI lists Volvocales as a synonym. AlgaeBase includes Chlamydomonadales but not Volvocales. Googling Chlamydomonadales pulls up fewer hits but more reliable sources, whereas Volvocales has more hits but more of them are WP mirrors. Google Scholar has something similar - Volvocales has more hits, but Chlamydomonadales has a 2018 source that specifically says that Chlamydomonadales is the current and Volvocales is the former name. And finally, although less reliable, almost all articles for algae in order Chlamydomonadales link to Chlamydomonadales rather than Volvocales. ♠PMC(talk) 05:41, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
