Should I move this page to Vic Power, and move the diambig page that is there to Vic Power as he is best known with that name and baseball refrerence has him as Vic Power. Also per WP:MOS, articles should be moved to the best known name. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 01:10, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would leave it as is. The reasoning is that even though he is better known to the American public as Vic Power, he is better known in his homeland and his countrymen as Victor Pellot. This is one of those rare cases where a person can be better known to the anglo population by one name and to the Hispanic population by another. Tony the Marine 06:54, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Enough reverting

[edit]

Let's discuss this as civilized people here. This is how I the originator of the artilce see's the situation.

The first paragraph starts with the persons birth name and by which he commonly known in his country "Victor Pellot" and is also followed by "Also known as Vic Power" the name that he used in the majors because he wasn't allowed to use his other surname "Pove" in Canada.

So, what's the big deal? Pellot was only known as "Power" during the time he played in the majors. "Power" was a nickname only used during his baseball playing days and not his true legal surname. He continued to use his real surname after he retired and that is how he is known in his homeland and that is the surname with which he was buried.

Giving you all an example, just because a person is known as "Bozo the Clown" in the United States does not mean that his name automatically is "Bozo The Clown".

Come on let's stop this nonsense now. I believe you all have better things to do in the Pedia. Tony the Marine 21:24, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What you say has the ring of truth. However, you'll need to convince Ron and all his collection of sockpuppets. A case has been put in here, if you'd like more info. Sadly, I think it won't end anytime soon. *sigh* --Ebyabe 22:14, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
An admin is already working on blocking his various sockpuppets as well as some of the IP addresses he uses. Liebman just invented a new one today: User:Ted ditullio. Wahkeenah 22:52, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I fully agree with you guys. Post your believes that the User mentioned has various sockpuppet acounts and has vandalized various articles here: WP:AN. This will bring the situation to the attention of the Admin community in general. Tony the Marine 05:37, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • The admin blocked all of them temporarily, for a day or two. I expect he will take more drastic action if the editor continues his behavior. Thank you for your support on this issue also. :) Wahkeenah 06:27, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • And back to the pleasant side of the subject, I vaguely recall Vic Power as a player during my childhood. Was there ever a better surname for a ballplayer? Unfortunately, he didn't quite live up to his name's reputation, but he was a good ballplayer. Wahkeenah 06:47, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jos martinez 15:41, 15 May 2007 (UTC)My name is Jose Martinez from New York State. I am a new Wikipedia user. I read about the controversy here regarding "Vic Power". Power, during his playing career was always know as Vic Power - and the name should not be reverted. You also seem to be degrading "Ron Liebman" - who is a prominent baseball researcher for manyyears - long before the arrival of the intrnet. Ron Liebman is correct that that Power was born"Victor Felipe Pellot Pove" and known as "Victor Felipe Pellot Power." That's the version that should stand whenthe page is unprotected. Stop harassing Ron Liebman (who I admire thorugh I do not know him personally). The article should not be continually reverted - it is nonsense. Also, I am not a "sockpuppet" (whatever that is) of Ron Liebman. I just want to see the internet correct - and correct is "vic Power" as is correctly shown everywhere I have looked. 5/15/2007, 11:40 AM[reply]

The SABR people have been asked to review the alleged "Ron Liebman" entries to determine (1) if he's an impostor and/or (2) why he refuses to cooperate with wikipedia's community standards. Since you're a brand new user who went immediately to this page and starting puffing up "Ron Liebman", I'm assuming you're either a sockpuppet or a meatpuppet of same. Fair use rationale for Image:Vic power autograph.jpg

[edit]

Image:Vic power autograph.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 02:27, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WTF

[edit]

wtf is this, eighth grade? “A-less-than-wholesome meaning??” Near as I can figure out from the Alternative Dictionary, it sounds like plotte; “pussy,” or “slut,” but you’d have to check with an Éxpos fan on that. —Wiki Wikardo 06:04, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreliable source

[edit]

I remove a link to a website on the free hosting service 50megs.com that was being used as a reliable source. I believe this is not controversial. --Damiens.rf 01:28, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SUMMARY: Literally every other publication or reference has this guy under "Vic Power". Let's not be the sole outlier, that's silly.

DETAILS: So, biography articles are titled by the name the person's commonly called. Thus Minnie Miñoso rather than Orestes Miñoso, etc. etc.

Pellot/Power did go by two names. However, on the American stage, where he attained the notability that allows him to have an article, he is known as "Vic Power".

Yes, it's true that he went by "Victor Pelotte" outside of American baseball, including on-field in his (relatively small-time) home leagues. Yes, it's possible that "Power" was never even part of his full legal name at birth, that it was "Victor Felipe Pellote Pové" rather than "Victor Felipe Pellote Power"; at any rate, later in life, he believed or at least wished this to be true, apparently. (His mother was born "Pové", but this was changed by a teacher (when she was in first grade, and without her desire or consent) to "Power". I gather that this teacher was an arrogant moron or something, but it is what it is. I haven't seen any indication that his mother went by "Pove" after first grade. And we have this quote from Power: "In Puerto Rico, we used two name, my father's name Pellot, followed by my mother's family name. So I used to write Victor Pellot Power".[1] He also says other things at other times.

At any rate, when he didn't want to go by "Vic Pelotte" in Montreal (too embarrassing), he went with "Vic Power". He could have gone with "Vic Pové", but he didn't. Probably the family took a different attitude to the "Pové/Power" thing as time went along. Families do that. Or maybe it was happened differently: "When I went to the States, they didn't know how to pronounce Pellot. So they cut the Victor, as in Vic, and they called me Power, Vic Power."[2]

Who knows? But anyway, none of that matters at all, what matters is WP:COMMONNAME. Let's see...

This Google Ngram Shows "Vic Power" as far more common than "Victor Pellot" in the English books they've scanned (which is many).

SABR's biography has him under Vic Power.[3] The Hall of Fame has him as Vic Power.[4] Baseball Reference has him under Vic Power.[5] as does Retrosheet[6] and the Baseball Cube.[7] All of his baseball cards have him as Vic Power/[8] Google Books gives access to many books referencing "Vic Power"[9]

Raw Google search results numbers mean almost nothing for various reasons, but FWIW "Vic Power" returns 123,000 hits while "Victor Pelott" returns 8,300. That's different on orders of magnitude.

So, it actually looks like we are the sole entity in this world cataloging this person under "Victor Pellot" rather than "Vic Power". In the English-speaking world anyway. I haven't found another example; I'm sure you can find two or three if you look har enough, but... Anyway, we are such an outlier here that it's actually embarrassing. Let's fix this.

(As to "Vic Power" being the main topic, the other two entities seem to be called called "Victor Power" (never "Vic") as far as I can tell and are also a lot more obscure.) Herostratus (talk) 06:04, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pellot used the name Vic Power during his major league career, but played as Victor Pellot when he played winter baseball in Puerto Rico. Yes, it is true that the American public knew him as "Vic Power" his so-called nickname, however in his homeland he was known as "Victor Pellot", his birth name and this is all explained within the article. No one, until now, has ever complained about this. Tony the Marine (talk) 06:19, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also sympathetic to the point that "Power" is a colonialist-imposed name, and it was a moral wrong to impose it on the family. There's nothing that we can do about that now, though. Herostratus (talk) 23:52, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, absolutely. That's exactly what I intended to suggest, I may have formatted it wrongly. Herostratus (talk) 23:49, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
