"Bears" wolf pack

I find the description of Whale's ninth patrol confusing. The first paragraph in that section states that Whale was part of the Bears, but the third paragraph ("On 17 September, the position of the Bear Pit...") states

...she received orders to disband and proceed as a coordinated attack group of four submarines called the "Bears" to "Convoy College"...

.
