"Bearss" was a U.S. Naval Reserve destroyer, homeported in Norfolk in the early 1960s. She had a skeleton Navy crew aboard, filled out by a Reserve crew. Her reserve crew, made of of reservists mostly from the Norfolk area, was called to active duty for (editing needed here) either the Berlin Crisis or the Cuban missile crisis or both. The reserve crew joined the ship's company on Oct. 23, 1963 under the command of CDR William F. Savage, USNR, and departed Norfolk shortly afterwards for two months of "refresher training" at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Bearss crew did well at the training and returned home to Norfolk, serving regular stretches at sea as a part of Task Force Alfa and Task Force Bravo off the Virginia Capes until her reserve crew was released from active duty on Aug. 1, 1962. (Filled in a blank part of the ship's history.
