Adding "Cardinal" within Name
[edit]I changed the Cardinal's name from Thomas Christopher Collins to Thomas Christopher Cardinal Collins. This was then reverted back by another member soon after the change. This name change is appropriate as per protocol as to how Cardinals are referred to and the style within the Roman Catholic Church. This is evident on the Profile Page for Cardinal Collins in the Catholic Hierarchy. Link to Profile Page Here. Instead of just adding it back in again I have started this discussion to give those who may be opposed to this change to voice their reasons why. Should there be no discussion on this I will make the change again at a later date. Please leave your thoughts on this topic. Magnetawan (talk) 23:20, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- In accordance with tradition, they sign by placing the title "Cardinal" (abbreviated Card.) after their personal name and before their surname as, for instance, "John Cardinal Doe". This is described and referenced in the Section on Title and Reference on the Wikipedia page for Cardinal. This further solidifies reason to make the change to his name in the first line of the page. - Signatures are one thing, names by which people are referred to are another. Pope Benedict XVI signs as Benedict Pope XVI (Benedictus PP XVI), but is referred to as Pope Benedict XVI. We shouldn't try to be "more Catholic than the Pope" and tell him he was wrong to use the form "Cardinal Paolo Sardi" here, "Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi" here, "Cardinal Józef Glemp" here, and so on and so on, never once using the form "John Cardinal Doe".
