The War Prayer (story)The War Prayer — There are only two articles with this title, the other one being The War Prayer (Babylon 5). This one is the primary topic and should be moved to the undisambiguated title. See the numbers below. — Jafeluv (talk) 13:40, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The War Prayer (story)

[edit]

Several points in the Wikipedia article on Mark Twain's prose poem, "The War Prayer," are incorrect as it presumes a 1916 publication date for Twain's text. The article declares that "The War Prayer" first appeared in Harper's Monthly Magazine in November of 1916 --an inaccuracy shared by many Twain scholars. It was in fact first published in 1923 in Albert Bigelow Paine's anthology Europe and Elsewhere. Thus, all discussion of the 1916 context does not apply. Twain did publish in Harper's Monthly Magazine in November, 1916: The Mysterious Stranger, A Romance appeared serially (having been sanitized by the aforementioned Paine. See No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger). Moxiekat (talk) 23:39, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When was it written?

[edit]

It seems an important point that is not included in the article. Dlabtot (talk) 03:13, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The piece was almost certainly written in reference to the Philippine–American War, which ran officially from 1899 to 1902 and unofficially until 1913: Twain was a very outspoken opponent of the war even though it was immensely popular. The actual date, however, is unknown, as the copy Twain left after his death is undated. Given these uncertainties, I think the article does it right by sticking to the known dates of when it was published. TechBear | Talk | Contributions 04:01, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
