untitled

Anyone know why there's a 12 year gap between this book and the previous tome? Did Vance weary of writing them? Peter1968 15:22, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recall that Vance claimed in was a financial matter. When the money was forthcoming, so were the two final sagas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:882A:0:59D9:581C:29C0:E931 (talk) 05:03, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lanslarke

[edit]

As far as I can tell, the lanslarke appears only twice in the book: once in Maxel Rackrose's list of homonyms of "Lens Larque", and later (as "lancilark") in a footnote on Darsh criminal punishments. In my copy (the DAW mass-market paperback) the two appearances are spelled differently. Has this been corrected in later editions? -- Dominus 09:14, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice catch, iskish. I used the same Daw edition. Maybe lanslarke is the singular form of the word and lancilark the plural. If you don't like that interpretation, you can take it up with Panak. I'm curious to see how the Vance Integral Edition handles it (though not $1500 curious). Clarityfiend 21:45, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
SF Bookclub edition has the same thing. I've misplaced the Grafton/Collins edition I had of the book, so I couldn't tell you re: it. There's a few of these "mismatches" in Vance's writing. In Servants_of_the_Wankh Vance calls the place in Settra the "Mercade" on one page, then the "Cercade" on another, then back to "Mercade" once again. I've seen this in several editions of the same book. Peter1968 10:23, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The VIE was exactly what i was wondering about; I'd hoped someone reading this might have a copy. -- Dominus 17:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Talking of minor inconsistencies, isn't this the book in which Gersen remembers being trained by his uncle (sic)? Captain Pedant 22:14, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dar Sai

[edit]

Suggest we drop some of the info on Dar Sai on this page, as the linked article is perfectly adequate (he says modestly) Captain Pedant 22:14, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uncle Inconsistency

[edit]

In this Demon Princes novel, Vance refers to the tutor of Gersen as his uncle. In the other four novels, the tutor is his grandfather. Vance's inconsistencies are so frequent, I believe that they may be intentional.
