Socialist Realism Architecture
[edit]The author of many of the articles about Belgrade applies this term to almost any building built after ww2. Most of the buildings he describes as being Socialist Realist are actually modernist/international style buildings, which this author may not like, or may indeed be of mediocre quality (and most were indeed built cheaply, due to great demand for buildings in the city which was both bombed heavily in 41 and 44, and was experiencing a massive uncontrolled growth after 45). Socialist realism in itself is not even applied to architectural styles, but commonly it refers to neo-classicist or beaux-arts buildings constructed in the 1930's to mid 50's in Soviet Union. The only building in Belgrade that fits this description is the Trade Unions building on the Nikola Pašić square, and even that is debatable, because the building's architecture very closely follows the Pre-war building of the Museum of Serbian History (once of Yugoslav History).
Author has also issued, in this case, completely unwarranted criticism of the post war reconstruction of Terazije square. Whilst there are people nostalgic of everything that has to do with the 'old' (pre ww2) Belgrade, fact is that even before war, massive demolition of smaller buildings was done, in order for greater architectural uniformity to be achieved, which is what was done to Terazije after WW2, with very solid results. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.157.213.138 (talk) 12:49, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
