Backlinie’s performance in the film
[edit]I have twice corrected misinformation about Backlinie’s acting in the film. There is no evidence, in the citation to the paragraph or elsewhere, that she was unable to give a satisfactory performance as an actress without artificial stimuli from the director. It is true that she was not told when she would be initiallly pulled under water (by Spielberg himself, according to the Blu ray documentary), but the remainder of the performance was her own. Judging by the success of the film, the response of audiences to her scene, and comments by Dreyfus and others in the cast, she provided a remarkably realistic and terrifying intro to the film, and it is unclear to me what the motives are of the contributor who persists in undermining her skills as an actress (?)
