Rename proposal Squanto Wilson --> George F. Wilson

[edit]

Consistent with recent discussion at WT:BASEBALL, this is a proposal to rename biographical article Squanto Wilson to George F. Wilson. Searching on newspapers.com finds that during Wilson's time in professional baseball (player: 1911–1914; manager: 1923), he was referred to as "George F. Wilson" much more than "Squanto Wilson". Search examples, all done on newspapers.com:

  • "george f. wilson" catcher for 1911–1914 gets 72 hits
  • "squanto wilson" catcher for 1911–1914 gets 7 hits
  • "george f. wilson" baseball bowdoin for 1911–1914 gets 39 hits
  • "squanto wilson" baseball bowdoin for 1911–1914 gets 6 hits
  • "george f. wilson" manager hanover for 1923 gets 24 hits
  • "squanto wilson" manager hanover for 1923 gets 15 hits

As there is no current article named "George F. Wilson" on Wikipedia, this would be a straightforward move, with "Squanto Wilson" continuing to redirect users to the new article title. Comments welcome—please reply in the below section. Thanks. Dmoore5556 (talk) 05:34, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Squanto WilsonGeorge F. Wilson – George Francis Wilson was primarily referred to as "George F. Wilson" during his time in professional baseball (as a player during 1911–1914; as a manager in 1923). While baseball reference sites such as Baseball-Reference.com and Retrosheet list him (or have previously listed him) as "Squanto Wilson", that name was not used as often as George F. Wilson by contemporary newspaper reports. The results of searches conducted via newspapers.com are listed on the Talk page. Dmoore5556 (talk) 05:38, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
