Well water
[edit]Snifters are also used in the USA on private well-water systems. There are two reasons for allowing the system to sniff when the pressure drops: (1) to drain the downstream pipes, so that they do not freeze up in cold weather, (2) to introduce air into the pipes and storage system. Start up torque requirement for the well pump is reduced by emptying the pipes before startup., and well water (unlike lake/river/reservoir water) typically has low volumes of dissolved air, and the air bubble in the pressure tank will dissolve into the water, and needs to be replenished. 124.187.219.128 (talk) 01:12, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
