[edit]The section on 'Action Understanding' duplicates parts of the 'mirror neurons' page and (to my mind), doesn't really belong in a page on empathy. This is because the term 'empathy' applies mainly to emotional states rather than actions. I suggest this section could be removed, or greatly shortened.
I also removed the sections on how mirror neurons were discovered. Despite the fun anecdotes in the press, the original researchers (Rizzolatti et al) have made it clear that stories about how mirror neurons were discovered by eating ice cream or moving fruit are myths (see the 'Mirror Neurons' talk page). The Singer 2005 Science paper does NOT support the idea that sensory experience is part of empathic response. Read the title "Empathy for Pain Involves Affective but NOT sensory components of pain". Furthermore, the Singer study challenges the idea that mirror neurons are involved in empathy, and should be addressed further. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charlespeirce11 (talk • contribs) 19:42, 28 May 2008 (UTC) Charlespeirce11 (talk) 19:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
title is misguided
[edit]As the opening paragraph indicates, the title is misguided. The relevant "simulation theory" isn't a theory of empathy. It's a theory of social cognition (including "mindreading").
So the article should be removed. Someone should replace it with an article on "simulation theory of mindreading and social cognition." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobbomo1 (talk • contribs) 16:29, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: (non-admin closure) No Consensus for any further action. Simulation theory is now a WP:DAB page; the page was moved to Simulation theory of empathy (its location immediately before the RM was filed) during the RM. power~enwiki (π, ν) 05:39, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Simulation theory of mind → Simulation theory – The primary topic for the term "simulation theory" is the theory of mind(-reading) or "empathy". It is the only result in the top 10 at Google Books other than false positives (i.e., "Simulation: Theory..."). Same result at Google Scholar.
The short title is preferable because all the obvious forms of natural disambiguation ("of mind", "of mind-reading", "of empathy") are potentially misleading to the average reader. The counterpart to simulation theory is at theory-theory.
Currently, both the proposed title and Simulation Theory redirect to simulation hypothesis and there is a proposal at Talk:Simulation Theory (album) to move that article to the main upper-case title. I think the upper-case title should redirect here and hatnotes can send readers to the album and the "hypothesis". Srnec (talk) 02:21, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Support per arguments made by Srnec above and Hadger at Talk:Simulation Theory (album). – PhilipTerryGraham (talk · articles · reviews) 00:07, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- Strong oppose (possibly because the simulation wants me to). Both the upper and lower case 'Simulation theory' titles redirect correctly to 'simulation hypothesis', which is actually probably better known as the 'simulation theory'. It has long-term historical significance if it is somehow proven accurate, and presently it is gaining more prominence as both a meme, a point of interest, and because of the new Muse album. The common name for simulation hypothesis is simulation theory. Randy Kryn (talk) 03:21, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- Please move the title back to "Simulation theory of empathy" which is what the page language is about. Thanks. And neither "mind" or "empathy" show up before 2009 (per the n-gram], so all of these competing names are fairly new (the album was released a couple of days ago, Friday, as new as you can get for something that many editors say is now the common name). Randy Kryn (talk) 03:35, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- Ngrams are case sensitive. So you are wrong. Srnec (talk) 23:21, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I was looking at the name as a proper noun when putting in the n-gram search. Thinking about this three-name primary triangle, where each has a good argument to be the primary, a disamg page, with all three well-described, may be the best solution. That way everyone looking for any variation of the theme gets to find out about the other two options, which may then attract their interest as well. This might be how the simulation wants it, as it did tie-into the mix an interesting explanation of much of human thought, perception, and behavior along with a band aptly named Muse. Randy Kryn (talk) 02:09, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
- Move back to Simulation theory of empathy, per the above. This is probably not the primary topic for Simulation theory, just some WP:RECENTISM is suggesting this. It would take a lot more that two "because Google suggests so" searches to demonstrate it. If someone wants to make a case for "of mind" over "of empathy", they can do so, but this has not been done yet, and the title is inappropriately mis-matching the text. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 17:10, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- The point of using Google Books and Google Scholar is that they are not slaves to the news or to internet culture. They give us a sense of what "simulation theory" refers to out there in the real world. How do you propose I establish it if not be pointing to how the term is used in reliable sources? Srnec (talk) 23:21, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
- Nice to have SMcCandlish posting in again, and better for the encyclopedia for sure. Proper emoji here. Randy Kryn (talk) 02:09, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
- Comment. I have boldly created a dab page. Srnec (talk) 16:17, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
