Origin

[edit]

Does anyone have any guess where "shh" orriginated, I would be interested to know. In a discussion with frieds someone said that maybe it came from the Indians and they get it from the wind. What do you think?

My guess would be that it was originated by parents. ;-) When an infant is upset and screaming a lot, one trick to calm them is to make a loud, long "Shhhhh" sound at them. It reminds them of the sound of the blood and amniotic fluid moving around the womb, and is very comforting to them, letting them calm down and stop screaming. I guess as the infants got older, it just became habit for the parents to say "Shh!" at them when they were being loud or fussy, and became the universal sign of "be quiet!". --Maelwys 15:07, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dab page

[edit]

'Shh should really redirect to a disambiguation page, as it is the abbreviation of the important developmental gene/protein Sonic Hedgehog Homologue. --TH —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.32.188.81 (talk) 09:57, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
