S&E/B&C
[edit]I though the Sheffield and Eccleshall Co-op were taken over by/merged with West Yorkshire Co-op to become Yorkshire Co-op (with it's Sunwin brand), allowing Brightside and Carbrook Co-op to rebrand themselves as Sheffield Co-operative society. Certainly our local S&E grocery stores became Yorkshire Co-op and of the city centre department stores, S&E became Sunwin House, while the B&C's became SCS. Or was it more complex than that? 84.70.34.102 (talk) 16:59, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- The only online reference to the end of the Sheffield and Ecclesall which I can find is the Star article, which states that it merged with the Brightside and Carbrook. They could be wrong, but I imagine that would have attracted letters to the editor, which didn't appear. Warofdreams talk 17:23, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
There are a couple of good sources for working out who merged with who:
Good luck!

Unfortunately the databases above are incomplete. The FSA Mutuals register suggests that 84.70.34.102 above is right. See:
- http://mutuals.fsa.gov.uk/SocietyDetails.aspx?Number=1230&Suffix=R (earlier names not listed, Sheffield Co-operative Society taken over by United in 2007.)
- http://mutuals.fsa.gov.uk/SocietyDetails.aspx?Number=1773&Suffix=R (Sheffield and Ecclesall taken over by Yorkshire Co-operatives in 1986.)
but there is no definitive mention of Brightside and Carbrook.
The sharebook search site is also a bit vague, but should help you to piece things together with your local knowledge.
Try Sheffield city library or National Co-operative Archive in Manchester (call before travelling).
- Archives of Co-operative News normally cover mergers
- Many societies archive their records with a good library or museum service after a merger
