I have removed Robert Stanfield's name from the list of alumni as he did not attend Dalhousie Law School.Bwark (talk) 23:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Can someone factcheck Dalhousie's claim to having the oldest law faculty in the Commonwealth? University of Sydney's law school predates Dalhousie's by 28 years -- including a specific endowment to the university itself for the establishment of a legal chair in 1880.[1] And that is negating the fact that the UK itself is part of the British Commonwealth. Queen Anne, for example, issued the decree that started the law faculty at Scotland's University of Edinburgh in 1707. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.86.53.231 (talk) 07:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Dalhousie Law School's claim is that it is "the oldest university-affiliated common law school in the British Commonwealth"[1]. This appears correct; in fact, The University of Sydney's Law School did not begin operating as such until 1890 [2], well after Dalhousie. The UK is part of the Commonwealth, but the claim does not negate that as the original law faculties at Edinburgh, or even at Oxford or Cambridge, did not operate as university discipline law schools teaching the "science" of the common law [see, eg., http://digitalcommons.pace.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1227&context=lawfaculty]. Regarding the name change, the proper new name is "Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law", not simply "Shulich School of Law". See the following excerpt from an Oct. 1st 2009 email sent by Law School Dean Phillip Saunders to the entire law school student body:
"In recognition of Mr. Scuhlich’s support, the Faculty of Law will become the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law. This name maintains our historic ties with the university, while celebrating a commitment to our future." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.11.20.110 (talk) 23:05, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

While the Dean may have sent that email. Various new agencies including the CBC have reported that the name is the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. Unless there is other sources that the Deans email I would suggest the name be kept as has been reported in the media. Also the email is older than the news reports suggesting that the final name may have yet to be decided upon at the time of the email. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.173.239.211 (talk) 00:32, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

It should also be noted that the name the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University is consistent with the names of the other Schulich schools across Canada.[3] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.173.239.211 (talk) 00:38, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
