Islamic State control?

[edit]

Russia media is declaring that this town has been liberated from the Islamic State. A Guardian report claims it was an IS headquarters. But that Guardian report is iffy. The author, Jonathan Steele, seems to have an axe to grind, elsewhere contending that "Assad's popularity... [has been] distorted in the west's propaganda war" and to prove that point cites a dubious poll. More importantly, we don't have other sources indicating that the Islamic State controlled territory this close to the coast. Absence better evidence that the Islamic State had any presence here, or for that matter anywhere in the vicinity of Latakia, it should not be reported that the town was liberated from IS.--Brian Dell (talk) 22:12, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
