Thoughts on the use of "was" in the lead

[edit]

WP:BDP requires editors to assume that anyone born within the last 115 is alive unless there are reports of death. I am not intent on contradicting this assumption per se - however, the article subject has gained very little attention outside of his reign in the eastern province, and, for the sake of article stability, i do prefer having a stable lead. Regardless of whether or not he is still alive, he is no longer an Afghan rebel king. By saying that he "was an Afghan rebel king who ruled only in the Eastern Province", i'm knowingly breaking MOS:TENSE (which is a guideline, not a rule) in order to make the article take less assumptions (we do not say whether or not he is dead or alive - we simply focus on the 1940s) and in order to maintain article stability.
