For a recent and well-written (2003) discussion of the issues and beliefs about this saint, see: Smith, K. A. (2003). "An angel’s power in a bishop’s body: the making of the cult of Aubert of Avranches at Mont-Saint-Michel." Journal of Medieval History 29 ((2003) ): 347–360.
Louis Duchesne (1910). Fastes épiscopaux de l'ancienne Gaule: II. L'Aquitaine et les Lyonnaises. Paris: Fontemoing. p. 222. prints the episcopal list of the Bishops of Avranches, which has an Authbertus, but he is earlier than Bishop Rahentrannus, who came to the episcopal seat only ca. 681/683 (p. 224-225). That seems to rule out a date of 708 for Aubert. What is the evidence for 708? The story of the founding of Mont Saint-Michel seems to be a single-source myth. --Vicedomino (talk) 19:03, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
