When does Irish Oak put in at St. Johns? The end of that paragraph is confusing. Is she a member of any other convoys? If not what's she doing between SC55 and being sunk?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 02:07, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- You are right, it is confusing - all those convoys, to the Irish Oak there was are really only one convoy + and there is more to the story, some of which cannot be used as it would be OR - or I suppose we could self publish and then use. And just to really confuse you - The Irish Oak was never really in any convoy - I had better explain:
- SC 52 left on 29 October 1941 - it ran into a wolf pack and the entire convoy retreated
- ships from SC52 were amalgamated with SC53 and left on 5 Nov. There was trouble on the Irish Oak and she returned
- she tried to leave in convoy for a third time with SC55 on 16 November, her engines broke down and she was left sitting like a sitting duck - alone - immobile - in camouflage colors.
- they got a tow back.
- The crew would not sail in camouflage again - there were other incidents which influenced this decision. She was painted in peacetime colors plus EIRE and tricolors painted all over. She was towed to Boston, where her engines were repaired. She sailed from Boston (John Clarke says 1 June). When I was writing this article I left all this convoy stuff out, But now that it has been added, it had better be sorted out.
- The other issues. When she was in New Orleans, R Marsh, her engineer had a heart attack and was hospitalized and she had to sail to St Johns without him. Her engine had been repaired in New Orleans but there were further problems which were attended to in St Johns - the yard there recommended a Greek engineer while another engineer Eamon O'Keefe of Dun Laoghaire was sent out from Ireland. According to John Clarke the Greek was a total alcoholic, and the yard just wanted rid of him. There was trouble at sea between these engineers. There was a boiler room 'blow back' and O'Keefe was badly burned. (which was reason two for turning back) Back in Canada the Greek was tried by the Canadians and jailed.

- It's better, but the whole paragraph still needs a good copyedit. And what was she doing between arriving in Dublin in 1942 and being sunk in 1943? She was probably sailing back and forth between North America and Ireland, but you need to specify, at least in general terms, what she was doing.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:48, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
