thriving populations

[edit]

I surfed to this article from the general article on Barbary Macaques [1]. That page states: "The last wild population in Europe is that of Gibraltar, which unlike that of North Africa is thriving" meaning the population in Gibraltar is thriving while the population in North Africa is not.

This page however states: "The Barbary Macaque population in Gibraltar is the last in the whole of the European continent, unlike that of North Africa which is thriving" essentially meaning that the population in North Africa is thriving while the population in Gibraltar is not.

It is impossible to reconcile these two statements. They mean almost exactly the opposite of one another. Does anyone know which is the correct statement and can edit the article to reflect an accurate position? --62.173.76.218 07:49, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. - UtherSRG (talk) 09:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, not really, as this article goes into too much detail on this particular group for the more general article about the species. --Gibmetal 77talk 20:07, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Culling of monkeys (spring 2008)

[edit]

I have recently edited this page to indicate information (reported on numerous major, reliable web-sites) that a culling of these monkeys is taking place. Unfortunately, this information was swiftly removed, although it is information that is both important and relevant to the article, as "it is proposed that around 25 monkeys be culled but this has not yet taken place. Discussions are in progress. I will add to the article accordingly when we know the final outcome".
However, 1) the culling has indeed begun (at least 2 monkeys have received lethal injections) 2) there is no need to remove the information totally - it may be reworded, if need be, when backed up by media sources 3) ongoing events have always been included in wikiarticles, there is no need to wait for the final conclusion before even mentioning them initially. I am therefore putting the info. back in a rephrased manner. --AlexSuricata (talk) 16:57, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I appreciate your contribution. This is indeed important and relevant, however, not much has been said by the Government at this time and the the press is mostly reporting on assumptions and largely varies in reports. If we give it a week, we should have some accurate information to add to the article then. Regards. --Gibmetal 77talk 17:34, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also think we need to wait as the cull has not yet taken place, and it may be that the surplus monkleys are found a home somewhere where they will be able to live properly. WP:NOTCRYSTAL suggests that we should not predict the future and the media reports are forward looking. --Gibnews (talk) 19:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Level of Care (1938)

[edit]

Apparently attempts to wipe these creatures out were made in 1938, at least that's what George Orwell said on the species. I'm having trouble picturing how that could happen with the military caring for the creatures. Anyone able to reconcile this? --John Lynch (talk) 11:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your post. I can't seem to find any other sources to back up the statement. If you do please post them here. --Gibmetal 77talk 13:19, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Brigaders"?

[edit]

Under "Military care", there is a sentence "They were named after governors, brigaders and high ranking officers." (my emphasis) "Brigader" is wikilinked to "brigade", and I'm assuming it's just a typo which should read "brigadier", but I'm hesitating before changing it as I'm not particularly au fait with military terminology. Anybody...? Dom Kaos (talk) 20:45, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct. I shall fix it. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:08, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reference seems like spam

[edit]

Almost at the bottom of this entry it is stated: 'Another story links Gibraltar to Africa by a subterranean passage over 15 miles (24 km) long which begins at Lower St. Michael's Cave and passes under the Strait of Gibraltar,[18] and the Gibraltar Barbary macaques entered The Rock from Morocco this way.[19]

The reference for part of this statement (reference number 19) seems more like spam then a proper reference. Are there reliable references and if not, should the whole section remain? Andrawaag (talk) 20:17, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive monkeys

[edit]

And what about the recent headlines about “disruptive monkeys” being exported to Scotland? It’s a journalistic spin; a Scottish wildlife park asked if we could let them have a troop of monkeys. We sent them a troop of 30 – one cohesive group that all knew each other. (Eric Shaw, the director of the Helping Hand Trust, who supervises the macaques within Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Reserve)
