Origin of name & `Watership Down'

[edit]

Is the origin of the name `Test' known? The section on `Watership Down' adds little, and includes the false claim that the river Test is weed-free, which it is not. Barney Bruchstein (talk) 10:57, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know the origin of the name, but this is written about Testwood House "The name derives from Lesteorde (sic) 1086 (Domesday Book), Terstewode c.1185. 'Wood by the River Test'. Celtic or pre-Celtic river-name (obscure in origin and meaning) + Old English wudu.2" on the page http://southernlife.org.uk/testwood.htm. I hope that leads somewhere.
As far as the section 'Watership Down' no claim is being made about the river being weed free, just a reflection of the contents of the novel, which being a novel does not purport to be fact.SovalValtos (talk) 11:56, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
