There is no use of the term REVEREND -- He is "Preacher"

[edit]

There is no mention of Reverend Power in the novel. Reverend is a honorific title for an actual person of the cloth. He is called PREACHER throughout the book, never Reverend, as it is understood as he is not ordained, that he is just a self-style preacher. This "Reverend Harry Powell" is made up. It need to be changed.Montju (talk) 03:53, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I haven't read the book or seen the 1955 film for ages, so I don't whether Reverend or Preacher is correct. If you want the title of this article to be changed there is a process documented at WP:RM. You will need arguments supported by evidence, especially about which is the commonly recognizable name, per WP:COMMONNAME. A quick Google shows 8670 results for "Reverend Harry Powell" and 14900 for "Preacher Harry Powell". Incidentally, I notice that at time of writing The Night of the Hunter (novel) and The Night of the Hunter (film) both show Reverend. Masato.harada (talk) 10:35, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The character is referred to as Reverend in Roger Ebert's review, and in the 1991 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain that veers wildly away from the book. In the 1955 movie, the character, when being sentenced for car theft at the beginning of the movie, is called "Harry Powell" and he objects, saying "Preacher Harry Powell".
But I see your point. Instead of complaining, make a case and file for a name change. Thank you. Montju (talk) 17:52, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
