retro" derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning "backwards
[edit]Retrognathism simply means the jaws i.e. the maxilla, the mandibuble or the both are backward or decrease. Maxillary retrognathism means the maxilla is in a more posterior position with reference to the cranial base. The SNA angle determines whether the maxilla is prognathic, normal or retrognathic.
