Notable players

[edit]

I removed two players who didn't have articles, since they can't be that notable. Also, I'm not sure if the fact that players who received their international caps before or after playing for RCS automatically makes them notable for the club. I'll look into that. - Dudesleeper / Talk 10:00, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I pretty much wrote the section under this assumption, indeed: once a player hasd been capped (be it while with the team or not), he's notable. Mrbluesky (talk) 15:58, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have been sorting up that section, trying to be as objective as possible despite being an RC Strasbourg supporter. I kept most French internationals even if they had no caps when at Strasbourg (Djorkaeff played at Strasbourg at his beginnings for example), but not all of them (e.g. Jean-François Larios, who had an anonymous spell at Strasbourg and is most remembered for being the guy who was kicked out of Saint Etienne and the French team because he would not get along with Platini). Other players were instrumental in winning titles for the club and are remembered by supporters... or they are famous abroad like Farina and Hosni. For three of them there is no page yet but Deutschmann played almost 400 games for the club and was a 1979 champion, Monczuk is in the top 5 goalscorers of all time and Mateo was one of the best defenders in the French championship during the 1940s, winning the cup in 1951.
The only exception is Wenger who was a very minor player but he is perhaps the most famous in this list ! So this is why I kept him in this section. Zitelli67 (talk) 11:48, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The formatting of this section is messed up. Please try and fix it when you can. Thank you. - Dudesleeper / Talk 13:20, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Following peer-review suggestion, I created List of RC Strasbourg players. I think this is clearer now. Zitelli67 (talk) 00:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Racing Name

[edit]

What is the origin of the name "Racing"? --147.226.178.123 (talk) 20:25, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I included that story in the club's hitory. Racing took the name from the Racing club de France, one of the pioneering sports club in France based in Paris with Coubertin among its founders. It was some francophilia gesture in 1918, as a club historian as written "they wanted to be the most French and this is why they ended picking an English name". Zitelli67 (talk) 11:40, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is some great background detail. I suppose I'd also be curious what the origin of the term really is. Does the term "Racing" have any significant meaning in club sports (for the team that originally used it)? It seems to be enigmatic. Thank you. --Blackbox77 (talk) 03:27, 12 November 2008 (UTC) (147.226.178.123)[reply]
Hi, the way I understand it is that at first "racing" meant athletics, i. e. running, especially sprinting to these Frenchmen of the 1900s who were fond of England's sports clubs but did not speak so well English. I know that the first section of the Racing club de France in Paris was athletics and also the first football championship in the Paris area in the 1900s was organized by the athletics federation. Then, the Racing club de France was some kind of a model, so many clubs took it just like they also had "Football Club" or "Athletic club"... Almost every French sports team dating back to that era has such an English name and it is similar in Spain or Belgium for example... but not in Germany (for example the first name of Racing Strasbourg was Fussball Club Neudorf and not football club). Zitelli67 (talk) 23:02, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting. So "racing" was seen as a reference to athletics in general (specifically running, track, etc.) by Frenchmen in the 1900s. I have always wonder the significance of the term and brought it up over at the Football club names talk page here. Thank you! --Blackbox77 (talk) 03:28, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RC Strasbourg Alsace

[edit]

It seems (exhibit 1 and exhibit 2) that this is their new name, but -- to my eyes -- it isn't mentioned in the article. - Dudesleeper talk 16:15, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Racing Club de Strasbourg AlsaceRC Strasbourg Alsace – We do not use 'full names' for football clubs (see Category:Football clubs in France for the standard). The short name of this club is therefore 'RC Strasbourg' (which I believe is a more historical name, although is still used by NFT) or 'RC Strasbourg Alsace' (used by Soccerway and the club's official Twitter and Facebook. I think the latter is correct, even though the club is simply known as 'Strasbourg' for its shortest name. Interestingly the related categories are already at Category:RC Strasbourg Alsace.
