Other aspects of Quentin Reynolds
[edit]This is a very short article on Quentin Reynolds and it leaves out some important aspects of Quentin Reynolds' varied & active life as a journalist. In his non-fiction book "In the Garden of the Beasts,"(published about 2006, I believe) author Eric Larson describes Reynolds' friendship with Martha Dodd, the daughter of U.S. Ambassador to Germany William E. Dodd. At that time Miss Dodd, who was trying very hard to be part of the expatriate journalist community in Berlin, had very strong illusions in the Nazi movement, which she viewed as part of a "revival" of Germany. Reynolds befriended Martha Dodd and her brother and went with them on a memorable visit to Nuremberg, where the three witnessed first-hand the public humiliation of a young German woman who had planned to marry her Jewish fiance. As Reynolds and the Dodd siblings watched, the woman was paraded through the streets with, her head shaved, her face painted white, and a sign around her neck reading "I have offered myself to a Jew," as thousands watched and a brass band played. This was the first time an American journalist had directly witnessed a Nazi hate crime (to use the modern expression). Reynolds filed a story shortly afterwards, leaving the names of the Dodd siblings out. Subsequently, he was confronted by Nazi foreign press point man Putzi Hanfstaengl, who claimed the story was an invention. Reynolds defended the truth of the story and further pointed out to Hanfstaengl that the Ambassador's son and daughter were also eyewitnesses. That shut the Nazi spokesman up. There are other references to Reynolds and his wife in Larson's book, which he apparently drew from Reynolds' autobiography. In short, I think this Wikipedia article could be enhanced by including the role Quentin Reynolds played as one of the first American journalists to try to alert the American public to the brutal anti-Semitism of Hitler's fascist regime. In its present form, I do not think this article on Reynolds gives him his due. 169.156.21.180 (talk) 17:15, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
