Recent Research regarding Proteles evolution

[edit]

So I know it has been suggested in older but reliable research that Protelinae could have been an off-shoot of Lycyaena or a related, more derived species. That's definitely a possibility, however, there is a recent article ("A new aardwolf-line fossil hyena from Middle and Late Miocene deposits of Linxia Basin, Gansu, China" by Tseng, Z. J. (2022)) regarding the discovery of a new hyaenid species that could be the closest morphological link to Proteles (aardwolf), and that research also reinforced the possibility "that the aardwolf lineage has an ancient origin from small-bodied stem hyaenids prior to the appearance of large and robust bone-cracking hyaenines" (as quoted in the paper). Now, while this article is much newer, it was also referenced in the Hyena wikipedia page so as to add the genus Gansuyaena in the list of Genera within Hyaenidae. So perhaps, it can also be referenced here to include the aforementioned possibility regarding aardwolf evolution. 59.88.174.17 (talk) 13:07, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This simple suggestion on a Talk page was removed initially... Before removing this again, please provide a reason for it. This topic is relevant to the article (regarding Proteles and its evolution) and I've provided the appropriate citations for the same. 59.88.161.237 (talk) 09:07, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
