Preservation Development is a term in common use to describe this approach to land conservation funded by adjacent development, specifically with regard to farmland. The term has been in use since at least 1974. The term is cited and described in the reference by Harvard professor Richard Peiser in Urban Land, in 1996.
Wikipedia contains articles on "Conservation Development" and on "Farmland Preservation," distinct but related ideas within urban and regional planning. Each refers to a funding source and legal structure for land protections. Neither term, nor Preservation Development, are owned or promoted by any single individual or company.
Wikipedia also references "Development Supported Agriculture," which is a protologism (2008) referring to Preservation Development. Baldwincenter (talk) 21:01, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
NPOV, Citations and Notability
[edit]NPOV - Neutral adjectives substituted in Relation to Smart Growth section. Also clarified inappropriate applications in zoning. References to inventors / stakeholders removed. The Preservation Development model is here compared to other economic and planning models for farmland preservation, and the article does not advocate. Citations - References have been made in-line to source specific facts about the topic. References are unchanged. Notability - There are three models for preserving farmland in the US. Wikipedia contains entries on the other two, cited in this article, and this is the third. Farmland Preservation is itself a Wikipedia article. The topic is referenced without quotes or trademarks in national publications, going back a decade. Baldwincenter (talk) 16:36, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
