Survey Says …
[edit]> This was corroborated by a statistical analysis undertaken by Google to determine which emoji were the most popular among Japanese users.
Has anyone considered the possibility that the Japanese were trolling? I am reminded of "Boaty McBoatface". Paul Murray (talk) 13:41, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Ummm....
[edit]I suggest that we change the name to "Chocolate Ice Cream Emoji" because it's actually supposed to be a chocolate ice cream. DeseretIsGreat (talk) 20:50, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- No, its official name is Pile of Poo. 2A00:23C5:FE0C:2100:508E:9F0E:8766:7AE8 (talk) 08:49, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

The pile of poo is much older than that
[edit]The coiled pile of poo goes back to Japanese manga, where it was common at least from the 1970s, if not earlier.
I once bantered with a couple of Japanese kids about it, around 1977. I asked them if they did maki-unko (one name for it) when they went to the toilet. The laughed and said "Of course not! You'd have to go like this to do one!" (accompanied by rotation of hips).
The article really needs to refer to the history of the maki-unko, maki-guso, or dokuro before it was made into an emoji.

Pile of Poo emoji → Poop emoji – This is the widely-used WP:COMMONNAME of the emoji, I have rarely seen any sources refer to it as "pile of poo emoji". Also satisfies WP:CONCISE. - Support per well-reasoned nom. Red Slash 22:49, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- Comment. I should point out that "poop" is not a commonly used word in British English, whereas "poo" is, so this may be a WP:ENGVAR issue. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:58, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not sure the data backs up that assertion... [1] [2] Red Slash 20:48, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- I have no idea what that's supposed to prove. The primary non-slang meaning of "poop" is part of a ship in both versions of English! But if you really want, compare [3] and [4]! -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Were you able to do those ngrams with a straight face? The data is interesting, for sure. I'm not sure if "poop" meaning excrement is "slang" by any stretch, but I had never heard before that British English is less likely to use "poop" for fecal matter. I feel like I've learned something. Thank you. Red Slash 16:18, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- In actual fact, if British people say "poop" they are more likely to mean fart! Although the latter is far more common. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:28, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- If you switch the corpus to English in general and English fiction on the ngram viewer, they both show "poop" as the more common term. InfiniteNexus (talk) 04:36, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- As I have already pointed out, "poop" does not only mean excrement in either American or British English, so this proves precisely nothing. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:26, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

- Support as common name. As someone from the UK, I'm not sure that this is an ENGVAR issue either as I've always known the emoji as the "poop emoji". Not sure how much weight to give google trends but the term "poop emoji" does seem to be more widespread in both the UK [5] and US [6] (although it is closer in the UK). Alduin2000 (talk) 16:40, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support per WP:COMMONNAME. And it appears there is already a precedent for departing from "official" Unicode names: Eggplant emoji. Graham (talk) 02:13, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support British press seem happy to use "poop" rather than "poo", (example) but think its important we still use the alternative list of names so "poo emoji" could go there? I rarely see "pile of" used so I think we drop that regardless. Its just a decision - poo vs. poop. As a sidenote, a lot of the emoji names as they seem to have adapted over time, so I myself might suggest some moves as well on other emoji pages.FelixFLB (talk) 14:35, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- The article then refers to it as the "pile of poo emoji" throughout and never once as the "poop emoji"! -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:52, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not its "official" Unicode name? If it is, then no matter what the article is titled, I don't see how we can omit that name altogether. Graham (talk) 00:28, 25 August 2022 (UTC)- WP:COMMONNAME. Nardog (talk) 01:18, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'm aware that WP:COMMONNAME exists, Nardog. My !vote literally begins "Support per WP:COMMONNAME." I am referring here, however, to the prospect of removing the official name from the article altogether, something that our article title policy obviously doesn't contemplate. Graham (talk) 02:59, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- WP:COMMONNAME. Nardog (talk) 01:18, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think FelixFLB was suggesting removing it from article text. Correct me if I'm wrong. ––FormalDude talk 03:08, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- I could be misinterpreting, in which case it's a moot point. Graham (talk) 03:31, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes exactly that FormalDudeFelixFLB (talk) 08:48, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Replying to all the points, I only meant "pile of" to be removed from the title/url. However, Necrothesp makes a good point that "pile of" is then used throughout the text. Might be worth changing so its all uniform once a decision is made. FelixFLB (talk) 08:47, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Elon Musk
[edit]Besides a personal attack, please follow WP:BRD and do not undo a revert on your addition, Afif Brika1. That one person uses a poop emoji is trivial, no matter if it's mentioned in reliable sources. Please reinstate my revision and discuss first. And do not use personal attacks. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 16:14, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- 💩
- that's not one person. That's Elon Musk, he represents twitter (one of the largest social media) against major news organization like NPR, Guardian, CBS, Forbes, etc. Major Company gatekeeping information from journalist is not a trivial subject
- If you're asking me, then I will delete this far more unimportant paragraph. But I'm not deleting it because I'm a polite person. In 2016, a termite mound in Western Australia was transformed into a smiling poop emoji by a couple with supplies from Kmart. According to Wired, "the smiling pile of poo is something we can all identify with. Afif Brika1 (talk) 16:28, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- You haven't reinstated the old version. Would you be so kind to follow WP:BRD? It's how we do things. Considering you're such a polite person after all.
- The two articles you used as references are the same news piece. It's not about the poop emoji per se, it's about the dumpster fire that is Musk's takeover of the company. It's not needed. You're absolutely correct, the ant pile bit should be removed as well. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 17:20, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- why I should i care about that? The page WP:BRD clearly said that it's optional.
- You're just being insufferable because other people point out that NPR is major news media, not some celebrity tabloid Afif Brika1 (talk) 17:39, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- At no point have I said anything about the quality of the sources. It is simply not needed. Please undo your revert. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 17:42, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- You're talking about Musk takeover as dumpster fire which show your bias, so you perform jihad to remove everything Musk-related
- Let me remind you that this is a page about Poop Emoji, everything related to poop emoji as long as it's well-sourced will be part of this page Afif Brika1 (talk) 17:54, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Odd choice of words. I undid your edit and that's it, but I "perform jihad to remove everything Musk-related" somehow? You're incorrect, there is something as WP:UNDUEWEIGHT, not every mention of a particular subject should be mentioned. I am going to revert your edit, since it seems you are unwilling to do so yourself. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 17:58, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

- Say Ferret or Sergecross73, if either one of you is not too busy, could anyone help out here? I am about to go to bed and have a busy week ahead of me, I can't keep arguing with someone who is not willing to listen to reason.
