Spelling of the name

[edit]

I wonder why the name is spelled Commerçon, while the French Wikipedia and almost all other sources that I can find spell it Commerson. The French Wikipedia also lists a number of books about him, all in that spelling. Can anybody give a source why the spelling with -ç- is used here? Thanks Stephan Matthiesen (talk) 09:12, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

@Stephan Matthiesen: Agree. Most sources spell his name with an s; I now adopted this in the article. Have Tylototriton (talk) 15:26, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Baré

[edit]

The article says "It was not until the expedition reached Tahiti that Commerçon's servant on the voyage, Jeanne Baré, was discovered to be a woman. In spite of Commerçon's apparent lack of perceptiveness concerning Baré..."

This is doubtful. The Jeanne Baré article says "She had been Commerçon's co-worker, housekeeper and lover before the trip." This is doubtless from Ridley's book, referenced elsewhere in that article. Comerçon very likely knew pretty well that she was, in fact, a woman. HughGRex (talk) 14:00, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The 'Start' rating given to this article seems rather appropriate. Possible improvement of article via expansion on "Commerson's Dolphin" and "noble savage." --Aarktica 21:05, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
