Pirate democracy

Is it really fair to describe Leeson's account of pirates as describing them as "pioneers of democracy"? Leeson's point is that pirates didn't need the state--I think it would be fairer to see him as treating them as pioneers of anarchy. Individual pirate vessels may have been organized democratically, but I think that the article's description of Leeson's project may mischaracterize him politically. 66.215.220.180 (talk) 00:51, 5 July 2009 (UTC)garychartier[reply]

The source does support the statement. However, Leeson, as our article mentions, is an anarchist. Note, for example, the first block quote in the article. Saying that pirates were innovators in early forms of democracy doesn't mean that Leeson favors democracy. DickClarkMises (talk) 05:11, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
