Name

[edit]

The ODB does not give "Masca" as his surname, but rather "Verraccio". Given the confusion between him and the cardinal, is Masca even his name? Srnec (talk) 03:00, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fasti does give the name as Masca - but this is one of the earliest volumes of the Fasti. Handbook of British Chronology (3rd ed. 1996, 2003 reprint) p. 261 gives "Masca" also. I freely admit he's not high on my priority list. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:31, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've partially solved this. Nicholas Vincent, "The Election of Pandulph Verracclo as Bishop of Norwich (1215)", Historical Research (1995), 143–63, at 153, writes, "In the standard reference works he continues to be descibed as Pandulph 'Masca', despite the fact that this this represents a confusion between the Pandulph who was bishop of Norwich and an earlier namesake, a native of Lucca who served as cardinal deacon of the basilica of the Twelve Apostles from 1182 to at least 1201, dying at some time before 1213." His footnotes indicate that

This Cardinal Pandulph is to be distinguished from a namesake, a native of Pisa, cardinal deacon of SS. Cosmas and Damian (fl. 1130) responsible for writing various of the lives of the popes in the Liber Pontificalis, for whom see I. S. Robinson, The Papacy, 1073–1198 (Cambridge, 1990), pp. 63, 75. The surname ‘Masca’ attributed to the later Cardinal Pandulph is unauthenticated. . . The surname Masca is still applied to the bishop of Norwich by Fasti, ii.56, and in the standard list of catholic bishops, Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, i.371.

Vincent's surname, Verracclo, differs from the one (Verraccio) given in the ODB. I also found a citation to Vincent's paper that renders it Verracchio, which is a more correct Italianisation of the Latin Verracclus, which I can find in sources in refence to Pandulf's relative, Giles (Egidius). I think this page ought to be moved, but the surname which, to me, looks most accurate, Verracchio, has little support. Opinion? Srnec (talk) 02:24, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed the ODB article is by Vincent... and he cites his paper with "Verraccio" in the title, so I think this article should be moved to Pandulf Verraccio. Any objection? Srnec (talk) 02:32, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. I'll need to cover the "Masca" bit with proper verbiage when (or if) I ever get to him but .. it's not a biggie. Ealdgyth - Talk 02:35, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
