This page is a stub, and it doesn't seem like there is much more info that could go in it. It seems best to merge this page into Battle of Palmito Ranch which has more substance. What does anyone else think? 2601:647:4E01:7B6F:2CEC:D3EE:A5FA:B328 (talk) 04:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No response yet, so I will do it. If anyone disagrees, we can talk about putting it back.

‘Final battle’

[edit]

I note the revision of 26 February 2018 by user 47.189.196.186, who says: “I deleted 'possibly' on the page since it was proven that it was the final battle.”

The user would need to quote an authoritative reference in support of this rather selective claim, and the article re-written, to emphasise that this long-running debate is now officially rendered academic. Valetude (talk) 10:04, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Appomattox was not a General Surrender

[edit]

The first paragraph, as written, described the surrender at Appomattox as a general surrender of all Confederate forces to Union forces. This is incorrect. In Grant's letter to Lee, he specifically asked only for the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The surrender document that they signed specifies only that army. Other Confederate forces gave separate surrenders to local Union commanders at later dates, most famously the surrender of the army under Joseph Johnston to William T. Sherman on April 26, 1865. Johnston and Sherman had tried to negotiate a general end to hostilities but their agreement was rejected by Grant and President Andrew Johnson, who ordered Sherman to give Johnston the same terms Grant had given Lee. Therefore, I changed the wording to reflect that Appomattox had only applied to the Army of Northern Virginia. 2600:1700:4070:6240:6C14:32FF:1332:6CA9 (talk) 14:17, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
